Documentation Engineer (Remote)
DevDocs is a fully remote company that hires developers to help our clients build amazing docs. It sounds simple, but it’s incredibly rare in the technical writing world. We’ve been around for over three years, working on all kinds of projects for clients like Qualcomm, American Express, and up-and-coming startups like Aptos. Right now, we’re revamping documentation and creating docs tools—and we’d love to bring on more talented software engineers to make it happen. We’re looking for curious, driven devs who want to: Work directly with clients to understand their biggest pain points and solve them. Stay fully remote—and spend zero hours commuting. Deliver real value through both code and written documentation (yes, sometimes you’ll write docs, but the focus is on using your dev skills to improve them). Collaborate with a team of developers who genuinely enjoy what they do. Leverage every tool in the toolbox—code, AI, Pipedream, or whatever else—if it helps us create better docs more efficiently. At DevDocs, we tackle real problems people care about. We talk to clients to get a handle on their toughest challenges, come up with creative solutions, do some hands-on work manually at first to really nail down the details, and then automate those processes with in-house tools. After we wrap a project, the tool we built becomes part of our standard offerings for the next client, moving us toward standalone products we can eventually sell alongside our services. We’re a growing startup, which means there’s plenty of room to stretch beyond day-to-day coding. If you want to learn about sales, hop on a sales call. Interested in recruiting? Help us screen candidates. Think link-checking should be automated? Take the lead in finding the right solution. We love welcoming tinkerers who experiment—just keep your core responsibilities on track. Despite all that opportunity, we’re not about crunch culture. A 40-hour week is the standard, and we believe in a sane work-life balance. Our founder started DevDocs to build a place they’d actually want to work, and that spirit is embedded in everything we do. Key Responsibilities: Ultimately, DevDocs would be hiring you to collaborate with clients on producing top-notch docs, with a strong focus on technical depth and process design. You’ll: Write or overhaul documentation for complex technical topics (security, hardware, software APIs, manufacturing, etc)—and improve the process by coding new scripts or mini-tools where needed. Analyze clients’ existing docs or content structures, then plan and implement better information architecture. Talk to subject matter experts (SMEs) to gather insights, clarify details, and ensure our docs are spot-on. Iterate quickly based on feedback, ensuring docs are accurate, clear, and maintainable. Communicate progress, address roadblocks, and plan next steps with client teams via Slack and video calls. Pitch in on internal DevDocs product development—whether that’s building new automation tools or refining existing processes. Requirements Curiosity and self-directed learning – you pick up new tech fast, and spot problems clients didn’t even realize they had. Comfort with ambiguous, changing conditions – you’re the type to figure things out even if the instructions are fuzzy. Strong technical foundation – whether it’s in software, hardware, or both. You think like a developer and solve problems methodically. Project and stakeholder management – you’re good at leading tasks and keeping clients closely informed. Fast-paced, client-facing experience – you’ve delivered on tight deadlines before (and know how to stay focused while doing it). Preferred Qualifications: A Bachelor’s (or equivalent) in an engineering or scientific field, plus at least 4 years of technical experience. Familiarity with documentation frameworks (Markdown, API doc platforms, or similar). Ability to handle quick feedback loops, iterate rapidly, and elevate quality each time. You like side projects, whether they’re coding-related or not—you’re always teaching yourself something new. Benefits Contract Terms: 1099 Contract (on-going) 40 hours/week (full-time) Must be able to support a US timezone Compensation - The hourly rate for this role is $40–$75, depending on experience and qualifications. Merit-based raises are common, with many team members seeing increases within their first six to twelve months based on performance and contributions. Can you confirm that you're able to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship, now or in the future?
