VEPS Armed Security Guards will maintain a high visibility presence and prevent all illegal or inappropriate actions. The goal is to detect, deter, observe and report. This role plays a vital part in supporting campus safety by providing general security, public safety, and customer service to the college community, with a strong focus on maintaining a safe and secure learning and working environment. The Security Guard 1 position is responsible for patrolling campus grounds on foot and by vehicle to deter, detect, and respond to incidents such as fire, theft, unauthorized entry, property damage, and vehicle prowls. Duties include locking and unlocking campus buildings, responding to emergencies and fire alarms, assisting motorists with issues such as dead batteries, and taking appropriate action as needed. The position enforces campus rules and regulations, addresses and refers student conduct concerns, and collaborates with local law emergency response agencies when appropriate. This role may also conduct preliminary investigations on incidents resulting from college policy violations and non-criminal incidents. As an essential staff member, Security Guard 1 may be required to work variable shifts, including days, nights, weekends, holidays, and during inclement weather, natural disasters, or public health emergencies. This position reports directly to the Director for Safety and Security at Whatcom Community College Responsibilities Duties include but not limited to: Essential Functions: -Ensure the safety and security of students, faculty, staff, college property, and visitors by actively patrolling college facilities on foot and by vehicle, while enforcing all college rules and regulations; -Serve as a resource officer for security-related inquiries and assist individuals seeking directions or general campus information with professionalism and courtesy; -Help maintain a safe learning and working environment by providing a visible security presence on campus, which includes locking and unlocking buildings, offering safe escort services, applying appropriate de-escalation techniques, and coordinating with local emergency response agencies; -Serve as a visible deterrent to unsafe behavior that violates the Student Rights & Responsibility Code, college rules, or behavioral expectations by actively patrolling and surveying common areas, hallways, parking lots, and other campus areas. -Intervene in any verbal or physical encounters among students, faculty, staff or visitors, de-escalate hostile situations, and enforce policies related to building or facility use, weapons, tobacco, marijuana, illegal substances, traffic rules, and more; -Maintain security presence and order during campus events and activities and enforce appropriate regulations; -Respond promptly to emergency situations, administer first aid when necessary, and notify additional police or emergency responders as appropriate; -Proactively identify and respond to suspicious or unusual activity, ensuring timely reporting to local law enforcement as required; -Prepare and submit detailed incident reports to Campus Safety and Security, and to the Bellingham Police Department when warranted; -Educate, inform, and enforce parking regulations by issuing parking warnings and citations. -Keep an accurate and up-to-date daily patrol log; -Report safety concerns, hazards, and repair needs to facility and operations, and take temporary measures to mitigate risks when possible. -Serve as an essential employee during emergencies and disasters, including all-hazard situations such as natural events, man-made incidents, and severe weather conditions. Salary: -This is a 67.5% time, classified, WFSE (Washington Federation of State Employees) represented position. Salary is Range 43, starting at $2,592.00 per month which is 67.5% of $3,840.00 per month with periodic increments to $3,382.00 which is 67.5% of $5,011.00 per month. Shift and working conditions: -This position requires 27 hours per week, primarily during overnight shifts. The schedule may vary, but will likely include either: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, 9:30 pm to 7:00 am, or Saturday and Sunday, 8:00 pm to 8:30 am, plus 3 hours of administrative/training time mid-week.
