Per-Diem Attorneys needed for In-Court (live, in-person) appearances (Downtown)
27 Federal Plaza, New York, NY 10278, USA
This is not a full-time position. If you are currently seeking full-time work, please do NOT respond to this ad. Must cover Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and special consideration for those who will also cover Newark (you only have to be licensed in ONE state to do immigration work throughout all 50 states). If you can cover other parts of New Jersey, Long Island, or Philadelphia, even better. Ideal candidate is looking to supplement their income on a flat-fee basis, has INCREDIBLE BEDSIDE MANNER with clients, and understands that the work of a per-diem appearance attorney is 1/3 advocate, 1/3 court reporter, and 1/3 THERAPIST, and may involve significant time waiting for a case to be called. This allows time for preparing and interacting with the clients -- not for sitting on your cell phone, which only makes clients feel that you are not interested. Being early to appearances, and knowing that there is NO EXCUSE IN THE WORLD for being late is a MUST. Being late gets long-awaited court dates adjourned and loses my office clients and future appearances. Main area of practice is immigration, but other areas include bankruptcy, landlord/tenant, and some state and (rare municipal) appears. Experience helps, but eagerness to learn is better. Responses should include where you live, all state and federal admissions, should show me why your bedside manner/customer service is top notch, and a resume/writing sample doesn’t hurt either (that 1/3 court reporter means “How well do you write a follow-up that explains what happened at the appearance?” Yes, that is really important too!) We all need money and this pays money, but if your MO is “I must have top dollar” or "I expect this income to be my full-time income," then please do not apply. Appearances are not going to make you wealthy, but these days there is a large call for them. Because the world of per diem attorneys is small, a “no compete” agreement will be implemented. In other words, if you are looking to grow YOUR appearance business, then we are competition, and you should not apply. I am looking to add/grow my list of attorneys who are interested and available for these appearances. Newly admitted attorneys, and attorneys who are growing their own brick and mortar offices (but NOT already in the appearance business) are welcome, but this is not ‘full-time income’ work.
