WANTED: Social Media Manager to Save Democracy! (Lower east side)
We are a left-leaning political media company producing multiple award-winning podcasts. We are hiring a full-time, in-house Social Media Manager + News Gatherer + Production Assistant to join our fast paced creative team in Portland, Oregon. Our studio is creative, fast paced, and inclusive. Zero ego. High energy. This is not just a job. It is a chance to help shape the conversation in American politics, reach millions of people, and grow with a creative family that is scaling fast. THE ROLE Manage all aspects of our social media accounts. Post videos, image carousels, and compelling text-based posts. Create content that sparks conversation, engage with our audience, grow our community, and help drive paid subscriptions and donations. Help shape our shows by gathering news and building rough show outlines with bullet points and talking notes. Identify opportunities for rapid response to breaking news, viral clips, or disinformation spikes and feed them into the production pipeline. Distill complex stories into clear, concise notes for the creative team. Assist in the production of award-winning podcasts: adjust lights, swap batteries, monitor audio, and keep shoots running smoothly. Pitch in around the office with light tasks and occasional errands. Be a true team player. You will combine social media strategy, political news curation, and podcast production support. If you thrive on politics, trends, and creative problem solving, this role is for you. TYPICAL DAY Each morning you will scan breaking political news and create rough show outlines, talking points, and scripts. During filming you will assist with light production tasks such as adjusting lighting and changing camera batteries. Then you will post across social media and engage with the community by commenting, liking, sharing, and replying. You will also keep an eye on performance to guide the next round of content. The typical daily breakdown is three hours of news gathering, four hours of social media management, and one hour of production and office assistance. The mix can shift with breaking news or major releases, but this is the usual cadence. SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGEMENT You will be the digital voice of the brand across Instagram, TikTok, X, Bluesky, Facebook, YouTube, Threads, and Substack. You will plan and run a daily content calendar with platform-native formats including vertical clips, carousels, threads, reels, memes, and community posts. You will cut podcasts into short, scroll-stopping moments and thumbnails that perform. You will track and report performance, adapt tone per platform, build conversations, and moderate comments with care. You will also engage meaningfully with the community in comment sections to build loyalty, grow followers, and generate paid subscriptions and donations. There is a clear growth path. If all goes well, this role can evolve into creating vertical content on camera, becoming one of the faces of the brand, and sharing in the revenue that content generates. Helpful tools to know include YouTube Studio, Meta Business Suite, TikTok Creative Center, Final Cut Pro, CapCut, Descript, Canva, and Photoshop. Bonus tools to know include Apple iMac, iPhone, Zoom, Riverside FM, Opus Clip, and Logic Pro. Video editing experience is a big plus, though training will be provided where needed. NEWS GATHERING AND CONTENT SUPPORT You will start each day on the pulse of breaking political news and trends. You will curate stories, trending topics, and viral content from trusted sources that align with our mission and shows. You will flag rapid response opportunities for breaking news, viral clips, or disinformation spikes. You will distill complex stories into short, clear notes for the creative team. You will fact check, cite sources, and escalate sensitive stories for editorial review. Helpful tools to know include ChatGPT, Google News, X trending, and trusted political outlets. PRODUCTION AND ASSISTANT DUTIES You will support live and recorded sessions by adjusting lights, cameras, and mics. Training is provided. You will also help keep the studio humming with light office tasks and occasional errands. OUR CULTURE We are smart, bold, and fun. Zero ego. We move fast, experiment often, and learn out loud. We value creativity, curiosity, humor, and kindness. We are inclusive by design and welcoming to teammates from all backgrounds and identities. We back each other, give clear feedback, and celebrate wins together. Bring your A-game every time you walk into the studio. If you are a flake or looking to skate by, DO NOT WASTE OUR TIME. WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR We want someone with strong knowledge of U.S. politics and current events. You should have sharp writing and editing instincts, with examples that show tone and speed. You should have experience managing social accounts across multiple platforms with proven growth and an understanding of how algorithms work and how to maximize reach. You should be organized, reliable, detail-oriented, calm under pressure, and collaborative. You should be tech savvy with a willingness to learn new tools quickly. Video editing skills for vertical content are a plus, but not required if you have the drive to learn fast. College degrees are great, but we care more about hard work, creativity, and doing whatever it takes to succeed. BONUS SKILLS (NOT REQUIRED, BUT GREAT TO HAVE) Journalism, media, or political experience. Design skills in Canva, Photoshop, or Illustrator. Experience leveraging AI to streamline workflows. Familiarity with post-scheduling tools like Sprout. Comfort working in a small, scrappy creative team. YOU You are politically savvy and creative. You know social media like the back of your hand. You are hungry for success and driven to make an impact. You thrive in fast paced environments, solve problems with initiative, and take pride in your work. You are looking for a once in a lifetime opportunity to grow, create, and be part of something that matters. DETAILS: LOCATION: Portland, OR, near 9th and Burnside. This is an in-studio position, NOT REMOTE. TYPE: Full time, Monday through Friday. General hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with flexibility for breaking news and launches. STATUS: 1099 contractor to start with periodic reviews. COMPENSATION: Compensation is based upon experience plus profit sharing opportunities as we grow. The more we grow the more your compensation will grow. You will be our first official hire, and we take that very seriously. We want someone who will grow with us, build something meaningful, and save democracy while we do it, as part of a creative family that shares in the success we create together. EQUIPMENT: We will provide the tools you will need to succeed including an iMac Studio and iPhone. Plus access to a full production studio.
