VHT Special 6 AV-SP1-6 110 amplifier is definitely one of the best small tube combos out there. These are very simple and yet surprisingly versatile. It is hand wired, so mods are easy to do. I had plans to do a couple mods to the amp, but never got around to it. Below are the upgrades I made though. -Replaced the 6V6 power tube with a JJ. I rolled a few preamp tubes (each sounded good), but landed on the Sovtek, as it makes a good pedal platform. -Replaced cheapo stock grill clothe with Black Cane Grill Cloth (used by Egnater & Marshall Custom Shop) -The tolex had a couple tears, so I tore it all off and painted it with quality rubberized paint. I also painted white the area behind the VHT badge and the rear grill - giving it a cool tuxedo look. -Replaced the cheap 5/8” laminate speaker baffle with 1/2” plywood. Making it lighter, stronger and has better resonance. The firm price is $235. But I would consider working out a trade for an Ibanez Jet King or Epi Nighthawk. I live in Los Alamos (between Santa Maria and Buellton), and am often in the SB and SYV areas.
