TITLE: MIDDLE SCHOOL EDUCATIONAL ADVISOR POSITION: FULL-TIME (40 HOURS PER WEEK) COMPENSATION: $50,000-$55,000/YR DOE LOCATION: In-person. Vision: Like a child, we look ahead with imagination and without limits ABOUT EDUCATIONAL TALENT SEARCH (ETS) The JCYC ETS Program is a TRiO project administered by the Department of Education (ED). The goal of the program is to serve income-eligible school youth ages 11 and older who have the potential to be the first generation in their family to attend college. JCYC ETS supports middle and high school students to continue their education and graduate and encourages high school students and adults to enroll in 4-year institutions. POSITION SUMMARY The Educational Advisor will be responsible for the recruitment, identification, selection, and counseling of participants in-person at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School (MLK), San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD). They can effectively multi-task, are a strong team player, embrace continuous improvement, and have the vision to create systems to organize information and major responsibilities. They are also an avid user of technology. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Direct Service/Outreach: Recruit, identify, and select participants according to the following eligibility guidelines: Students who are low-income according to the U.S. DOE income levels; Students who have the potential to be the first in their family to attend college; Students who are interested in pursuing post-secondary education. Assess and determine participants’ educational needs and academic potential; Provide educational advising to encourage participants to complete secondary school and enroll in postsecondary educational programs; Provide academic, career, college information and personal development to program participants through presentations and workshops; Coordinate and implement local and long-distance field trips (i.e., college campus and cultural field trips); in-person career day and program activities as needed; Assist participants in applying for re-admission to secondary schools; Refer participants to appropriate social service and government agencies; Administrative: Recruit and Manage a caseload of 225 students; organize required program documents and data for each student into a complete file; Supervise Tutors and tutorial services provided at school site; Assist Senior Middle School Educational Advisor in the development and implementation of tutor training and services; Assist with the implementation and evaluation of project activities; Support middle school counseling staff and collaborate on events that complement the ETS program timeline. Staff participation in target school activities is subject to approval by the Direct Supervisor. Activities must not interfere with job responsibilities. Other Program Participation: Provide assistance, support, and resources for other JCYC College Access Programs and the High School ETS program; Participate in ETS and/or JCYC meetings, activities, committees, conferences, retreats, etc., as appropriate; Participate in advocacy initiatives prioritized by JCYC; Perform related duties as needed. SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE Bachelor’s Degree and some experience working with youth. Preference is given to individuals with similar backgrounds to the target population, such as being the first in their families to attend college, though not required. Strong organizational and follow-through skills, with attention to detail. Experience in conducting presentations and planning activities. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Computer literate with proficiency in MS Word and Excel and knowledge of PowerPoint, Zoom, and Google Applications. Experience working with diverse student populations. Bilingual preferred but not required. Ability to work cooperatively with secondary school faculty and community agency personnel. Knowledge of community programs and resources for youth in San Francisco. COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS Compensation for this position is $50,000 to $55,000/YR, based on experience. Title: Education Associate Classification: Temporary, Non-exempt (20 hours/week, 7 months/year) Pay Rate: $22/hour Reports to: Associate Director of Education Position Summary: The Education Associate is primarily responsible for facilitating the Museum’s school field trip programs for grades K-5, and mentoring volunteers in environmental education best practices. The schedule for this position is generally Tues, Thurs, Fri 8:30am - 12:30pm, and Weds 8:30am - 5:00 pm, with some weekend or evening shifts as needed. This position is temporary, through May 2026, during the school year. Specific Responsibilities: Program Support - Serve as a primary instructor for school field trip activities for grades K-5 both at the Museum and at outdoor field sites - Assist in the development, organization and preparation of program activities and materials - Provide logistical support during school programs, public programs and special events - Participate in ongoing training and evaluation activities - Assist with promotion and outreach activities Volunteer Program Support - Provide support for volunteers during field- and museum-based programs - Model preferred teaching practices and assist in providing coaching to volunteers and interns - Provide logistical support during volunteer trainings and enrichment activities - Provide supervision and direction to volunteers and interns during programs Administration - Routinely maintain program logs and databases - Assist Education Coordinators with program coordination and scheduling - Oversee the organization, maintenance, and security of program materials - Assist with the development, distribution, and analysis of program evaluations - Participate in Museum staff meetings and special events Essential Requirements: - Minimum of one-year experience as an Environmental Educator working with elementary school students - Knowledge of Santa Cruz natural and cultural history - especially as it relates to watershed science, native plants, and indigenous culture - Excellent public speaking skills - as it may relate to conducting a school field trip, introducing a special guest speaker, or making a presentation at a public meeting - Superb written communication skills with attention to accuracy, detail, and succinctness- specifically with reports, contracts, social media, and email correspondence - Graceful conflict management skills, and ability to be polite, personable, and diplomatic in relationships with partners, visitors, volunteers, donors, educators, and the media - Proficiency working with Google Apps, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and a willingness to learn new systems - Knowledge of child development and strategies for engaging school age children of varying ages - Superior time management skills - Must be available to work onsite during weekday mornings (Tues-Fri 8:30am - 12:30pm) - Valid driver's license and access to personal vehicle (mileage reimbursement provided) - Certification in CPR, Basic First Aid, and/or Wilderness First Aid preferred Preferred Qualifications: - Bachelor’s Degree in a related field - Experience leading youth groups of up to 40 people along uneven terrain in sometimes inclement weather - Coursework in Elementary Education, Environmental Education, or Interpretation - Experience working with volunteers of diverse ages and backgrounds - Fluency in Spanish - Interpretive Certifications from National Association for Interpretation or similar professional organization Work Environment: Standard office environment with significant time outdoors as well as occasional work throughout the Museum Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending and climbing stairs with occasional lifting of moderate loads (up to 50 lbs.)
