Zenith Navigates Market Turbulence with Strategic Wins and Underlying Profit Surge

June 4, 2024 – Zenith, the UK-based vehicle leasing and fleet management specialist, has released its financial performance for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026, painting a picture of a company successfully executing a strategic pivot. While grappling with significant industry-wide challenges in used vehicle valuations, the firm demonstrated robust underlying operational health, marked by substantial earnings growth and the securing of high-profile client contracts, most notably with e-commerce titan Amazon.

The headline figures reveal a complex year. The company reported an overall loss-making position on residual values (RV), a direct consequence of legal and accounting pressures stemming from vehicle cohorts originated during the unique, post-pandemic market frenzy. This was exacerbated by a sustained softening in used car prices, particularly in the first half of the fiscal year, leading Zenith to record a substantial £38.8 million impairment on its vehicle assets.

Beneath this surface volatility, however, the core business engine fired on all cylinders. Zenith's underlying performance told a markedly different story, with normalized adjusted EBITDA surging 31.9% year-over-year to £67.1 million. This leap is attributed to the compelling strength of its customer proposition, industry-leading retention rates, and disciplined progress against its strategic roadmap. The total managed fleet grew by 5.3% to 95,678 vehicles, a clear indicator of growth in its service-based operations.

A strategic rebalancing of its portfolio was a key theme. The funded fleet—where Zenith owns the assets—contracted by 4.4%, a deliberate move to prioritize higher-margin business lines. This involved a sharp, intentional 50.3% reduction in the Consumer funded fleet after the decision to cease new lease contracts under the ZenAuto brand. Offsetting this, the managed fleet—where Zenith oversees vehicles for clients—saw robust expansion, primarily driven by a 21.1% surge in the Commercial managed segment. This growth was powered by major contract victories in the third quarter, including a landmark deal to manage portions of Amazon's critical Middle Mile and Last Mile delivery fleets in the UK.

Exclusive Industry Insight: The EV Fleet Acceleration as a Financial Shield Beyond the immediate financials, a critical strategic narrative emerges in Zenith’s accelerated electrification push. Over half of the company's corporate and consumer-funded fleet now consists of battery electric vehicles (BEVs), a move that directly reduced its downstream Scope 3 emissions by 8.7% year-on-year. Analysts point out that this transition, while environmentally mandated, is increasingly serving as a financial buffer. "Ze’n aggressive BEV adoption is not just regulatory compliance; it's a savvy risk management strategy," notes a leading automotive finance analyst who spoke on the condition of anonymity. "Newer EV models, while facing their own depreciation curves, are somewhat insulated from the extreme volatility currently plaguing the used internal combustion engine market. This fleet mix is helping stabilize their long-term asset book against the very RV pressures they reported."

The company also demonstrated innovation in customer retention and value extraction during a period of economic uncertainty. Its "Project Volt" lease extension program and the launch of a secondary leasing proposition for used vehicles are designed to provide clients with cost flexibility and access to more affordable, quality-used cars through salary sacrifice schemes. These initiatives open up new customer segments and help manage the company's exposure to residual value fluctuations on the backend.

Looking forward, Zenith has fortified its balance sheet to weather continued market uncertainty. In April 2026, shortly after the year-end, the company concluded a significant recapitalization. This transaction involved an equity injection of approximately £100 million from shareholders and the extension of key debt maturities, providing what CEO Richard Jones describes as a "robust foundation" for executing its long-term strategy.

"FY26 was a foundational year of transition," stated Richard Jones. "We simplified our vision, strengthened leadership, and delivered strong underlying financial progress. By launching new propositions, expanding key partnerships like the one with Amazon, and focusing on higher-margin opportunities, we are positioning Zenith for disciplined, confident growth."

Chairman Stuart Rose acknowledged the challenging near-term outlook, citing geopolitical tensions and ongoing regulatory changes. However, he expressed confidence in the company's strategic positioning to navigate these headwinds. The dual focus on strategic client wins in high-growth areas like logistics and a deliberate shift toward an electrified, more resilient asset portfolio appears to be Zenith's blueprint for turning industry challenges into sustainable advantage.
