Zelio E-Mobility, an Indian electric two and three-wheeler manufacturer on a rapid growth trajectory, has officially inaugurated a new production facility in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. This strategic move is aimed at capturing a larger share of the burgeoning South Indian electric vehicle (EV) market and bolstering its national manufacturing network. (June 7, 2024)
The company's financial performance underscores this aggressive expansion. Zelio E-Mobility has reported an 81.8% year-on-year revenue surge, reaching INR 313.68 crore for FY2025-26, and maintains a four-year revenue CAGR of 121%. Following a successful BSE SME listing in October 2025 that raised INR 78.34 crore, the firm is channeling capital into scaling its operational footprint. The new Coimbatore plant represents a direct investment in regional market penetration.
Strategically located in Lakshmi Nagar Kannampalayam, the 39,000 sq. ft. facility is designed to enhance the company's logistical and service capabilities across southern states. Its primary operational focus will be on markets including Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and South Maharashtra. By establishing local assembly, storage, and logistics hubs, Zelio aims to significantly improve delivery times and after-sales service responsiveness, key factors in competitive consumer markets.
With an installed annual capacity of 60,000 units, the Coimbatore plant boosts Zelio's total manufacturing capability by 33%, from 180,000 to 240,000 vehicles per year. Initial production is projected at 24,000-30,000 electric two-wheelers annually, with plans to scale up in direct response to market demand. This incremental approach allows for operational flexibility and efficient capital deployment during the ramp-up phase.
The expansion is a critical component of Zelio's southern market strategy for the next 12-24 months. Company leadership identifies strengthening dealer networks, enhancing supply chain efficiency, and improving customer service as immediate priorities enabled by the new location. This localized production is expected to directly contribute to increased market share and profitability in the region by reducing overhead and transit costs.
From an operational standpoint, the plant currently employs 30 direct workers and is slated to add over 100 personnel in the coming months. This hiring push supports the company's broader goal of exceeding 500 total employees this financial year. The facility, established with an investment of up to INR 1 crore, will adhere to the same manufacturing and quality protocols used at Zelio's existing plants in Haryana (Ladwa and Patan) and Odisha (Cuttack).
Kunal Arya, Managing Director of Zelio E-Mobility, stated, "The Coimbatore facility is a strategic milestone that brings our production closer to a high-potential customer base in South India. This region is at the forefront of EV adoption in the country. By localizing key operations, we can serve our customers, dealers, and partners with greater speed and reinforce our commitment to India's electric mobility transition."
The launch capitalizes on strong tailwinds in the Indian EV sector. Government incentives under the FAME II scheme and rising consumer fuel costs continue to drive demand for electric two-wheelers. Zelio's expansion into Coimbatore, a known industrial hub, positions it to benefit from existing supply chain ecosystems and skilled labor pools, potentially offering a efficiency advantage over competitors relying solely on northern manufacturing bases.
Exclusive market analysis suggests Zelio's targeted regional approach could be a differentiating factor. While many EV makers concentrate on pan-India launches from centralized plants, Zelio's multi-plant strategy aims to create regional strongholds. This could prove effective in a diverse market like India, where regional preferences, terrain, and charging infrastructure vary significantly. Success in the southern states may provide a replicable model for future expansions into other regions.
Looking ahead, the company's growth is supported by a dealer network of over 400 outlets across 25+ states, with plans to expand to 550+ dealerships by FY27. The Coimbatore plant's role will be to ensure this growing sales network is backed by reliable and timely product availability. Future announcements regarding new vehicle models assembled at the facility and specific technology upgrades are expected as the plant reaches steady-state production.
For investors and industry observers, Zelio E-Mobility's continued capacity expansion amid profitability signals confidence in sustained demand. The company's model of funding growth through public markets and reinvesting profits into strategic infrastructure like the Coimbatore plant demonstrates a focused approach to scaling in the competitive but high-growth Indian EV landscape.
