The Zeekr 7GT is one of the most anticipated electric wagons heading to global markets, including a potential US launch before 2026. While it’s a station wagon – a body style that has largely faded from American driveways – Zeekr is betting that its blend of sporty handling, European design, and aggressive EV performance can win over buyers who want an alternative to the ubiquitous SUV.
I recently had a chance to spend more time with the 7GT than ever before, sampling both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive variants on a racetrack and on snow. Right-hand-drive versions weren’t ready, but the Chinese-spec cars gave a clear picture of what’s coming. Here’s what stands out.
Zeekr hasn’t announced US pricing, but using the global structure as a guide, the 7GT could start around $40,000–$45,000 USD when converted from its European and Chinese pricing. That would place it against the Tesla Model 3 (no wagon), the Hyundai Ioniq 6, and combustion wagons like the Subaru Outback. The top-spec dual-motor AWD version might reach $55,000–$60,000. If Zeekr hits those numbers, it would undercut many luxury EVs while offering a more practical body shape.
Three core variants are expected: a base standard-range RWD, a long-range RWD, and a performance AWD. A special sporty fourth trim was hinted at, possibly a flagship.
The 7GT shares its minimalist face with the 7X SUV, but the rear end is unique – a split spoiler, full-width LED bar, and frameless doors. The proportions are classic Euro wagon: long hood, low roofline, purposeful stance. Up to 20- or 21-inch wheels add aggression.
Inside, the dashboard is dominated by a 15-inch touchscreen and a 13-inch digital instrument cluster. Higher trims add a 35.5-inch head-up display. Materials range from black textile to Nappa leather with suede-like bucket seats. The design language is clearly influenced by Zeekr’s Gothenburg design center, which also works on Volvo and Polestar. The result: a cabin that feels more Scandinavian than Chinese in its quality and ergonomics.
On the track, the 310kW/440Nm RWD versions are quick, but the real star is the AWD flagship with 475kW and 710Nm. Even with stability control on, the 7GT feels eager. On snow, turning off the nannies reveals a playful rear-biased character – massive drifts are possible, though the system is sane enough for daily driving.
The steering is a highlight: precise, well-weighted, with good feedback. The biggest question mark is suspension tuning. Chinese-spec cars felt a bit soft for US roads, especially compared to German rivals. Zeekr has indicated it may offer region-specific suspension calibration for the US market, which would be crucial.
The 800V architecture supports up to 450kW DC fast charging. Zeekr claims 10–80% in about 13 minutes on a 350kW charger. That’s faster than most competitors. The 7GT also offers 3.3kW vehicle-to-load.
Boot capacity is 456 liters (about 16.1 cubic feet) – similar to a mid-size SUV like the Honda CR-V. There’s also a 65-liter frunk. Range figures aren’t final for the US, but the long-range RWD is expected to exceed 400 miles (WLTP) – likely above 300 miles EPA.
The 7GT recently earned a five-star Euro NCAP rating under the latest, tougher standards. Zeekr will seek ANCAP (and likely NHTSA/IIHS) approval for the US. The brand offers a five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty; service intervals are every two years.
The 7GT is a direct challenge to the assumption that Americans only want SUVs. With its wagon shape, European styling, and EV tech, it could carve a niche similar to the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo or the Audi RS6 Avant – but at a fraction of the price. Zeekr has already confirmed plans to enter the US market, and the 7GT is a strong candidate to lead that charge.
Bottom line: If Zeekr delivers on pricing, range, and a US-tuned suspension, the 7GT could be the most exciting non-SUV EV to hit American shores in years. It’s fast, practical, and surprisingly playful. The hype is real – but the final verdict depends on how it adapts to our roads.
