XPeng L03: 'Most emotional' design yet, says designer

GOLD COAST, Australia — XPeng used the Australian and New Zealand launch event for its L03 coupe SUV to make a statement about design. Creative design director Joan Melenchon describes the L03 as the most emotional expression in XPeng's design family, and the first look backs that up. With a low, fastback roofline, a claimed 0.228 drag coefficient and an interior pitched as "a room, not a machine," the L03 targets younger buyers who treat their vehicle as a lifestyle accent as much as a tool. A brief written around feeling

Melenchon, who leads XPeng's Shanghai design studio, said the L03 brief combined liveliness, trend-forward thinking and advanced technology in one package. The intended owner, he explained, is a younger driver who wants an exciting lifestyle and is open to new experiences. He added that XPeng always tries to balance emotional and rational expression across its lineup; with the L03, that balance swings deliberately toward emotion.

The Shanghai studio has emerged as the hub of XPeng's global styling work, and the L03 is the clearest result of its push to give the brand a visual identity that stands out in a crowded EV market. That balance is visible in how the car was packaged: it had to look dramatic in a parking lot and still feel quiet, efficient, and usable in everyday life.

Proportions first

The L03 measures 4,650 mm long, 1,920 mm wide and 1,600 mm tall on a 2,850 mm wheelbase, placing it in the compact-to-mid-size crossover class. The design team dropped the roof line and pulled the tail into a fastback, with spoiler lines that make the body read as slim and sporty rather than tall and boxy.

The surface treatment is deliberately restrained. Rather than creases running down the flanks, the visual character comes from muscular front guards and rear shoulders. The result is an SUV that doesn't look like it's trying too hard to be sporty — it simply is.

Aerodynamics as a design driver

Aerodynamics were built into the design from the start. Active aero elements, frameless doors, flush glazing and hidden belt moldings combine to produce a drag coefficient of 0.228 — a figure XPeng says sits in the top five among mass-produced electric SUVs.

For context, the Tesla Model Y has been measured at about 0.23, so the L03 lands in credible company on the slippery-efficiency front.

Wheel choice reflects intent: 18-inch low-drag wheels maximize efficiency, while 20-inch five-spoke alloys deliver the sportier, more planted look.

The family face and a ducktail rear

The front carries the pixel-pattern lighting signature established on the M03 sedan, so the family connection is immediate. At the back, a full-width tail lamp is fused into a ducktail spoiler, with vertical air outlets on either side. The rear design is tidy and cohesive — a welcome contrast to the over-styled tails common in this segment. It is also a face that reads as XPeng from a distance, which matters for a brand still introducing itself in new markets.

A cabin that feels like a room

XPeng describes the interior as a room rather than a machine. A boomerang-shaped curve sweeps across the dashboard, with "emotional" surfaces at the front and more technical layers behind. The ambient lighting pulses in sync with music playback, a small detail that makes the cabin feel alive at night.

Materials lean residential: a velvet headliner, soft-touch panels and real brushed-metal speaker grilles, in light gray or dark gray. The boomerang dash is a deliberate break from the horizontal slabs used by many rivals; combined with the synchronized lighting, it gives the cabin a personality that photographs don't quite capture — you have to sit in it to feel the intent. For owners, that means a car that feels calm on a workday commute and a little bit special on a weekend drive.

Color science and a Black Edition

Five exterior colors are offered at launch. Phantom Purple uses nano-sized aluminum particles in its metallic coat for a more luminous finish. The other choices are Silver Frost, Midnight Black with a high-jet black pigment, pearl-coated Rock Grey and a three-coat Arctic White.

A Black Edition — black exterior package, black brake calipers and black 20-inch wheels — was presented as a global launch special.

Why the L03 matters beyond the Pacific

This debut isn't only about two markets. XPeng, one of China's best-known EV startups with listings on the New York Stock Exchange and in Hong Kong, is expanding one region at a time — established in Europe, now pushing hard into Australia and New Zealand. A design-led coupe SUV makes clear that XPeng intends to compete on style, not just price and specs.

The coupe-SUV segment is unforgiving. Done well, a sloped roof looks sleek and expensive; done badly, it costs headroom and frustrates buyers. XPeng's answer is to lower the whole body rather than just chop the roofline, giving the L03 confident proportions and setting it apart from the G6, a more conventional SUV sibling in the same class.

For U.S. readers, the L03 is a useful barometer. XPeng has not announced plans to sell the car in North America, and the launch schedule is centered on the Pacific for now. Chinese EV makers were once seen as competing on price alone; the L03 is another sign that script has flipped toward design confidence. The pace of upgrades across XPeng's lineup — stronger aero performance, bolder colors, more expressive cabins — mirrors the larger shift happening across the Chinese EV industry as it targets more demanding Western buyers.

In New Zealand, the L03 is priced from NZ$49,990, with first deliveries expected in November. Australian specifications and pricing have not yet been detailed.

Melenchon summed up the mood: "We are one team, we have one mission. Our hope is that this amazing car will have a great impact here."

If first impressions count, the L03 is off to a confident start.
