Xiaomi has officially launched the Smart Dial 2 – a radical rethinking of the physical crown on its smartwatches. The new dial ditches the traditional mechanical protrusion for a flush, edge-to-edge touch surface that the company calls a “seamless screen,” while simultaneously introducing a feature it brands as “emotional expression.” This one-two punch isn’t just a facelift; it’s a signal that Xiaomi is betting on deeper, more intuitive interaction between users and their wrist-worn devices.
The original Smart Dial was a rotating crown, similar to the Apple Watch Digital Crown, but Xiaomi’s second iteration removes the rotating part entirely. Instead, the entire surface of the Smart Dial 2 is a tiny circular OLED display that sits flush with the watch case. Users can tap, swipe, or press the dial to navigate apps, zoom maps, or scroll lists. The “seamless” moniker refers to the zero-gap transition between the dial and the watch body – no dirt traps, no accidental rotations while sleeping.
Xiaomi’s “emotional expression” feature turns the dial into a silent communicator. When the watch detects certain biometric triggers – like a spike in heart rate during a stressful call, or a sudden drop in activity after a long period of stillness – the dial can display subtle animations: a soft pulse, a tiny smile, or a gentle “breathing” light. Users can also set manual triggers, like a quick double-tap to send a “I’m thinking of you” pulse to a paired loved one’s watch.
Industry analyst Marcus Chen of TechInsights called it “the most human-centric hardware tweak in wearables this year. It’s not about notifications; it’s about non-verbal connection.” The company has opened a beta SDK for developers to create custom emotion patterns, potentially expanding the feature beyond watch faces into apps.
One concern with an always-on touch dial is battery drain. Xiaomi claims the Smart Dial 2 sips power by using a custom low-power OLED driver and a dedicated co-processor that handles tap detection without waking the main CPU. In early tests, the Mi Watch S3 with Smart Dial 2 lasted 12 days on a single charge under normal use – identical to the previous model’s battery life. The display itself is covered by a diamond-like carbon coating, rated for 100,000 taps without visible wear.
Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 7 retains a rotating bezel, while Apple uses a crown – both are mechanical. Xiaomi’s approach is fully solid-state, similar to the haptic touch buttons on the iPhone 7. The advantage? No moving parts to break, no water ingress points. The watch retains its 5ATM water resistance and MIL-STD-810G durability certification.
Early hands-on reviews from Chinese tech journalists note that the dial’s haptic feedback is “remarkably crisp” – three distinct vibration levels mimic mechanical clicks, rotation, and extra-long presses. The emotional expression feature requires the watch to be paired with a phone running HyperOS 2.0 or later, and currently supports only a handful of preset patterns.
The Smart Dial 2 will debut on the Mi Watch S3 Pro and Redmi Watch 5 starting April 25 in China, with a global rollout expected in late May. Pricing starts at ¥1,299 (≈$180) for the Redmi variant and ¥1,999 (≈$275) for the Mi Watch S3 Pro.
The Smart Dial 2 is more than a hardware refresh – it’s a bet on two trends: minimalism (removing the raised crown) and emotional computing (using the device as a proxy for feelings). If Xiaomi can scale the emotional expression feature through third-party apps, it could create a new category of “empathic wearables” that don’t just track steps but also nurture relationships. For now, the seamless screen alone is a compelling reason to upgrade – no more snagging on sleeves, and a cleaner look that rivals the best watches on the market.
