Updated May 6, 2026 — A Sunday afternoon driving lesson near Warner Avenue ended in tragedy when a 62-year-old Warren man was struck by a car driven by his 18-year-old daughter, police said.
The father was helping the teen practice driving in the area when the crash happened. The vehicle hit him and dragged him a short distance, according to WXYZ and the Warren Police Department. Emergency crews rushed the man to a nearby hospital, where he later died. The daughter was not injured and stayed at the scene, authorities said.
Warren police say the teen has been cooperative throughout the initial investigation. The department's Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit is now handling the case. Detectives are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or saw a car in the Warner Avenue area Sunday afternoon to call 586-574-4741.
The case highlights a danger that many families do not think about: supervised driving can sometimes turn deadly in seconds. Safety advocates recommend that new drivers spend time in empty parking lots or quiet streets before moving to busier roads. Parents should coach from inside the car whenever possible. If they do stand outside, they need to stay well out of the vehicle's path and never assume the learner will stop instantly.
Crashes remain a leading cause of death for teenagers in the United States, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This tragedy is especially heartbreaking because it happened while a father was teaching his daughter a lifelong skill — not during careless driving.
Police have not identified the victim or his daughter, and no charges have been reported. The investigation remains active as reconstruction specialists analyze the crash scene and interview witnesses. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Warren Police Department at 586-574-4741.
