Volvo has officially set October 12, 2025, as the date for the Indian debut of its flagship electric duo – the EX90 SUV and the ES90 sedan. The two models, built on the same 800-volt platform, will be introduced together as part of the brand’s 90-series electric lineup. While the launch is focused on India, the vehicles are global products, and the event will reveal India-specific pricing, battery specs, and range figures. As of March 28, 2025, Volvo has only released global specifications, with Indian certification pending.
The EX90, a seven-seat, three-row SUV, will become Volvo’s largest electric model in India. The company’s Indian website currently lists an estimated range of up to 600 km (373 miles) on a single charge, though the figure is not yet certified for the local market. Globally, the 2026 model year EX90 transitions to an 800-volt electrical system, enabling faster charging and improved efficiency. The SUV also features a centralized computing platform that allows over-the-air updates for safety and driver-assistance functions. Charging rates and other technical details for the India-spec variant will be announced during the launch event.
The ES90 shares the same platform as the EX90 but adopts a fastback body style, seating five passengers. Unlike the traditional three-box S90 sedan, the ES90’s sloping roofline gives it a more aerodynamic profile. In the UK market, Volvo offers three powertrain options: a single-motor 331 bhp version, a Twin Motor 450 bhp version, and a Twin Motor Performance variant delivering 674 bhp. The ES90 also features a 14.5-inch portrait touchscreen, a digital driver display, and Google-based connected services. International versions can be equipped with a 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system, a 360-degree camera, and Volvo’s advanced driver-assistance suite. The final equipment list for India will be confirmed at the launch.
U.S. Market Context
While the India launch is a significant milestone, U.S. buyers have been waiting for the EX90 since its original unveiling in late 2022. Volvo initially planned to begin U.S. deliveries in early 2024, but software delays pushed the timeline. As of March 2025, limited numbers of the EX90 have reached American dealerships, but full availability remains inconsistent. The ES90 has not yet been confirmed for the North American market, though Volvo has hinted at a possible 2026 introduction. The 800-volt architecture, which significantly reduces charging time compared to the 400-volt systems used in the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge, would be a key selling point if the ES90 comes to the U.S.
Pricing and Competition
Volvo has not disclosed India pricing, but the EX90 and ES90 are expected to cost significantly more than the EX30 (starting at around $35,000 in the U.S.) and the EC40. In India, they will compete with the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, BMW iX, and upcoming electric versions of the Audi Q8 e-tron. Globally, the EX90 starts at around $80,000 in the U.S., while the ES90 in Europe is priced similarly to the BMW i5 and Mercedes-Benz EQE. The October 12 event will also clarify whether Volvo plans to offer both models with a single large battery pack or multiple options in India.
Safety and Software Focus
Both models leverage Volvo’s next-generation safety technology, including lidar sensors, radar, and cameras, all integrated into a centralized computing architecture. The system can be updated over the air, meaning Volvo can add new driver-assistance features – such as automatic emergency steering or advanced lane keeping – after the vehicle is sold. The 800-volt system also supports ultra-fast DC charging, with the ability to add up to 300 km of range in about 15 minutes on a 350 kW charger, though Indian charging infrastructure may limit that capability initially.
What to Expect on October 12
The Indian launch event is expected to be broadcast live, with Volvo executives detailing the local specifications, warranty, and charging solutions. The company has been expanding its charging network in India, including partnerships with Tata Power and other providers. For the U.S. audience, the India launch provides a window into Volvo’s global strategy for the 90-series EVs, and any pricing or range announcements could foreshadow what North American consumers might see when the ES90 eventually arrives. Volvo has not commented on a U.S. ES90 timeline, but industry analysts anticipate a reveal later in 2025 or early 2026.
As the electric vehicle market heats up, Volvo’s commitment to a premium, software-defined electric lineup is clear. The EX90 and ES90 represent the company’s vision of safe, sustainable, and connected mobility, and the October 12 India launch will be the first major market introduction for both models together.
