The global electric vehicle narrative is no longer confined to China, the U.S., and Europe. As emerging markets accelerate adoption, VinFast's latest export milestone and delivery surge underscore a new center of gravity for EV growth.
As of June 16, 2025, the electric vehicle (EV) industry is witnessing a fundamental rebalancing. While traditional powerhouses like China and the U.S. face slowing demand, countries from Southeast Asia to the Middle East are posting record sales. Vietnamese automaker VinFast has emerged as a bellwether of this shift, reporting a 96% year-on-year increase in Q2 deliveries and dispatching over 5,000 vehicles on two dedicated ships in July alone.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) confirmed in its latest report that global car sales dipped about 5% in the first half of 2025 amid economic headwinds and policy uncertainty in China and the U.S. Yet EV sales rebounded sharply in Q2, hitting all-time highs in 50 countries. Markets such as Vietnam, India, Australia, and South Korea roughly doubled their EV sales year-over-year, while more than 90 nations posted positive growth. This pattern suggests that the next wave of EV adoption is being driven by emerging economies, where government incentives, falling battery costs, and expanding charging networks are converging.
According to the IEA, China and other emerging markets are expected to account for about 60% of global auto demand over the next decade. For automakers, that means long-term leadership will depend on winning in these regions rather than relying solely on mature markets. VinFast’s recent performance illustrates this principle in action.
