One person was killed Sunday night when a utility pole toppled onto a vehicle, sparking a fire that consumed the car in Hopkins, Minnesota, authorities confirmed Monday.
The fatal incident occurred around 9 p.m. on Blake Road North, a residential street in the Minneapolis suburb. Police have not yet identified the victim or disclosed what caused the pole to fall. The crash and subsequent fire left the vehicle engulfed in flames, with first responders unable to save the driver.
Xcel Energy crews worked through the night to restore power to more than 150 customers affected by the outage. The utility company said Monday morning that electricity had been fully restored, and that its team is cooperating with investigators.
A neighbor who lives in a nearby apartment complex told WCCO she was inside with her screen door open when she heard a loud bang followed by a popping sound. “The car alarm went off maybe five or six seconds later, and then I went to my patio door and saw white smoke,” she said. She reported seeing flames shortly after.
Police are conducting a thorough investigation, including whether weather, equipment failure, or a vehicle collision caused the pole to fall. No additional details have been released, but officials said they are reviewing surveillance footage from the area.
The tragedy has reignited concerns about aging infrastructure in the region. According to the National Electrical Safety Code, utility poles should be inspected regularly — typically every 10 years — but many poles in older suburbs like Hopkins may exceed that cycle. “Pole failures, while rare, can be catastrophic when they occur in close proximity to vehicles or pedestrians,” said Dr. Emily Hartfield, a civil engineering professor at the University of Minnesota. “Routine ground-level inspections and strength tests are critical to prevent accidents like this.”
Local residents expressed shock and grief. “It’s just heartbreaking. You never think something like this can happen on a quiet street,” said a neighbor who asked not to be named. The victim’s family has not yet been notified, and the name is being withheld pending notification.
This is the second fatal vehicle-pole incident in the Twin Cities area in the past three years. In 2023, a driver died in St. Paul when a utility pole fell on their car after being struck by a drunk driver. Safety advocates say the latest case underscores the need for proactive pole replacement programs.
Police urge anyone with information or dashcam footage from Blake Road North around 9 p.m. Sunday to contact the Hopkins Police Department. The investigation remains ongoing.
