If you’re shopping for a quirky Japanese coupe in 2025, the Mazda RX-8 keeps popping up as a tempting bargain. With its smooth-spinning rotary engine and four-door-coupe body, it’s a conversation starter – and often a headache. Before you pull the trigger, here’s what you need to know about buying a used RX-8 today.
April 11, 2025 – The Mazda RX-8 is the last production car to use a rotary engine. That alone makes it a cult hero. But the same engine that gives it character is also the source of its biggest pitfalls. Understanding the trade-offs – and knowing how to inspect a potential purchase – can save you thousands and a lot of frustration.
The rotary engine (Wankel) spins differently than a piston engine. Instead of pistons moving up and down, triangular rotors orbit inside a housing. The result is a silky-smooth, high-revving powerplant that loves to be thrashed. In the RX-8, that engine (codenamed 13B-MSP) produces 177 kW (237 hp) in the 2003–2008 manual versions – enough to make the car genuinely entertaining.
The RX-8 also looks like a coupe but hides two small rear-hinged doors, making it more practical than you’d expect. Fold the back seats and you can fit a surprising amount of gear. But those doors also confused buyers back in 2003 – they still do today.
Here’s the part nobody wants to hear: the rotary engine is fragile compared to conventional four-cylinders. Many RX-8s on the used market have already been through one, two, or even three engine swaps. The engine burns oil by design (you must check the level every fuel fill-up), and it hates being shut off cold. If you turn off the engine before it reaches operating temperature, raw fuel can flood the chambers, wash away the oil seal, and cause hard-starting and compression loss.
According to NHTSA’s complaint database, engine failure and loss of compression are the most common issues reported by RX-8 owners. A compression test is mandatory before buying any RX-8 – ask a mechanic who knows rotaries to run one.
The RX-8 attracted buyers who wanted to wring every drop of power out of it. Modified examples are everywhere – and many are time bombs. Adding a turbocharger or boosting boost without proper tuning often leads to engine detonation. The clutch also wears quickly; check for shuddering when take off.
Visually, look for mismatched paint, uneven panel gaps, and signs of crash repair. Lift the car to inspect underneath for frame damage. A full service history is non-negotiable – if the owner can’t show you records of regular oil changes (with the correct 5W-30 synthetic oil), walk away.

The manual transmission is the only way to experience the rotary engine properly. The early (2003–2008) manual cars are the most desirable because they have 177 kW. After the 2008 facelift, Mazda dropped output to 170 kW due to emission changes – a small loss, but still fine.
Avoid automatic RX-8s from 2003–2008 at all costs. They use a tired four-speed slushbox and the engine is choked to only 141 kW (189 hp). The driving experience becomes dull and devoid of the rotary’s charm. The post-2008 auto got
