March 28, 2025 — A Texas police officer is being hailed as a hero after risking his life to pull a driver from a burning car on a Houston highway, just seconds before the vehicle erupted in flames. Newly released dashcam footage shows the officer sprinting toward the stopped car, yanking open the driver’s door, and dragging the man to safety.
The incident occurred on the morning of March 27 along Interstate 45 near downtown Houston. The driver, a 42-year-old man whose name has not been released, had pulled over after noticing smoke coming from under the hood. Within moments, flames began licking up from the engine compartment.
Officer Carlos Mendez of the Houston Police Department was on patrol nearby when he saw the smoke. “I saw a car stopped on the shoulder and smoke pouring out. I knew I had to act fast,” Mendez told reporters. The officer’s body camera captured the entire rescue: he runs toward the vehicle, tries the passenger door, finds it locked, then moves to the driver’s side. He forcibly opens the door and pulls the disoriented driver out. As they stumble away, the car becomes fully engulfed in flames. A loud pop is heard just after they clear the vehicle.
“I just reacted. You don’t think about it in the moment — you just move,” Mendez said. The driver was treated at the scene for minor smoke inhalation but declined further medical attention. He later thanked the officer on social media, calling him “a guardian angel.”
The Houston Fire Department confirmed that the car was a 2018 sedan, possibly with a fuel line leak. Investigators are still determining the exact cause of the fire. Fire officials said the vehicle could have exploded at any moment, making the officer’s quick action critical.
“This is a textbook example of what police officers do every day — they put themselves in harm’s way to save others,” said Houston Police Chief Troy Finner in a statement. “Officer Mendez’s bravery is commendable, and we are grateful no one was seriously injured.”
The video, released by the Houston Police Department, has gone viral on social media, with over 5 million views on X (formerly Twitter) within 24 hours. Many users praised the officer’s decisive action, with one commenter writing: “This is the kind of heroism we need to see more of.”
Incidents of vehicle fires on highways are not uncommon in Texas, where high temperatures and long commutes contribute to mechanical failures. According to the National Fire Protection Association, there were an estimated 171,500 highway vehicle fires in the United States in 2022, resulting in 345 deaths. Quick response from first responders often makes the difference between life and death.
“Officers are trained to assess situations like this, but the split-second decision to approach a burning car requires extreme courage,” said Dr. Rachel Simmons, a professor of emergency management at the University of Texas. “The risk of explosion is real, but so is the duty to protect.”
The driver, who was on his way to work, later told local media that he had no idea the fire would spread so quickly. “I smelled something burning, pulled over, and then the flames just came. I’m alive because of that officer.”
The Houston Police Department has not yet announced whether Officer Mendez will receive a formal commendation, but Chief Finner indicated that the department would recommend him for a lifesaving award.
The rescue serves as a reminder to drivers: if you see smoke or flames, pull over immediately, turn off the engine, get everyone out of the car, and move at least 100 feet away. Do not attempt to open the hood or retrieve belongings. Call 911 and wait for professional help.
“I’m just glad I was there at the right time,” Mendez said. “Anyone would have done the same.”
