Southgate woman missing

Huron Township, Mich. — May 9, 2026 — Authorities are still searching for a Southgate woman after her crashed car was found in a Huron Township backyard, with no sign of the driver when officers arrived.

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office says deputies responded after a resident noticed tire tracks, broken fencing and an abandoned vehicle on the property. The car was registered to a Southgate woman, and attempts to reach her at home and by phone were unsuccessful. What might have looked like a routine property damage crash has since grown into a full missing-person investigation.

What we know so far

Investigators have not said exactly how the car ended up in the yard, but the damage suggests it went through part of a fence before stopping on the grass. A license-plate check led deputies to the woman’s last known address in Southgate, a Downriver community roughly fifteen miles northeast of Huron Township.

When officers arrived at the crash site, the car was empty. There were no obvious signs of a physical struggle, but authorities have not ruled anything out. The woman has not returned home, and she has not been in contact with family members, according to officials.

Deputies are now treating the case as a search-and-rescue operation. The first 24–48 hours are often the most critical in a missing-person case, and the response has been scaled up accordingly.

Search teams and equipment deployed

Wayne County sheriff’s deputies, Huron Township police and support teams have been combing the surrounding area since the discovery. Officials have not described the exact size of the search, but it includes canines, drones and officers on foot checking woods, drainage ditches, behind sheds and along neighboring properties.

A helicopter was expected to help from the air if weather allowed, though officials have not confirmed that publicly. The terrain around Huron Township includes both residential subdivisions and rural stretches, which makes a ground search slower and more complicated.

Deputies are also reviewing traffic camera data and automatic license plate reader information from nearby roads. That kind of evidence can help narrow down the direction the car was traveling before the crash, and whether the woman was alone.

Why a crash scene can complicate a missing-person case

Search-and-rescue specialists say an empty car at a crash scene can point in several directions. The driver may have been disoriented after the impact and walked off to find help. The person could have been picked up by a passerby and taken to a hospital. Or the driver may have left for another reason that investigators have not yet determined.

Because it can be hard to distinguish between those possibilities at the beginning, police often ask the public for help immediately rather than waiting for more physical evidence.

In this case, officials have not said whether the woman’s phone was found in the car. They also have not confirmed her name or photo, and they have not disclosed whether she had any medical conditions that might make her more vulnerable.
