January 15, 2026 – Victoria Police detectives are asking the public for help identifying two masked suspects who set fire to cars in a brazen $20 million extortion attempt targeting a Melbourne family. The case, linked to the notorious Bandidos bikie gang, has already led to multiple arrests but the primary arsonists remain at large.
The attack unfolded on October 27, 2025, when three men approached a home on Stephen Street in Yarraville, Melbourne’s inner west. They demanded $20 million from the 47-year-old male resident, threatening to burn down the house if he didn’t comply by the end of the week. During the confrontation, the victim was slapped and punched while a woman and a young child were inside the property.
Roughly a month later, the threat escalated. Around 2:20 a.m. on November 26, two masked individuals exited a grey Toyota RAV4 parked outside the same home. Using jerry cans, they poured petrol over the victim’s two cars and the front door of the house, then threw Molotov cocktails. The vehicles were engulfed in a massive fireball and completely destroyed, with the front of the home also suffering fire damage.
Security footage released Wednesday by the Echo Taskforce—the unit responsible for investigating organized crime syndicates and bikie-related offenses—shows the pair scurrying away after the fireball erupted. The video has been shared widely in an effort to generate leads.
In December 2025, police arrested a 23-year-old man from Thomastown and a 27-year-old man from Mickleham in connection with the arson. Both were released pending further inquiries. Separately, three patched Bandidos members—a 27-year-old from Kalkallo, a 23-year-old from Ivanhoe, and a 28-year-old from Craigieburn—were charged in November 2025 and have since been sentenced, though details of their penalties remain under court seal.
Renewed police appeal amid fresh attacks
The fresh appeal comes as investigators link the Yarraville extortion to a pattern of recent arson and ram-raid attacks across Melbourne’s western suburbs. Just hours before the police statement, a stolen 2009 black Toyota Prado was driven into a hotpot restaurant on Leeds Street in Footscray, about 2:50 a.m. The vehicle was found abandoned in the middle of the road. Arson attempts at the restaurant failed, and the offenders fled. Detectives are examining whether this ramming is connected to other fires.
In a separate incident overnight, a tobacco store in Northcote, in Melbourne’s inner north, was ram-raided for the second time in two days. While no immediate link to the extortion case has been confirmed, Echo Taskforce detectives are pooling information, suspecting a coordinated campaign by organized crime networks.
