February 20, 2025 – Walt Disney Imagineering has revealed that the structures of the upcoming Piston Peak National Park at Magic Kingdom were intentionally shortened to preserve the park’s iconic sightlines. The Cars-themed expansion, which replaces Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer’s Island, underwent extensive balloon testing over the past year to ensure its architecture does not disrupt views from Main Street, U.S.A., Liberty Square, or other key areas.
Imagineers used a combination of physical balloon tests and digital models to visualize how the new land would appear from every angle. A large balloon, roughly the size of Lightning McQueen, was lifted to the highest planned elevation of Piston Peak. Teams then spread out across Magic Kingdom to assess the sightlines. Initial tests revealed that some elevations were too high, prompting a redesign. After adjustments, a second round of testing confirmed the heights were “right on the money,” according to the Imagineers.
The effort underscores Disney’s commitment to the “show” philosophy—every element of the theme park must contribute to the immersive experience without breaking the illusion. By keeping the tallest structures below the treeline and carefully aligning them with the scale of nearby attractions like Big Thunder Mountain, Imagineers ensure that guests won’t see car-themed architecture peeking over the horizon from classic areas.
Sightline Coordination with Villains Land
In a unique twist, Imagineers also conducted a joint sightline test between Piston Peak and the planned Villains Land. The two new lands are being developed in parallel, and their scales must be directly related. This ensures that from any vantage point, the proportions of mountains, buildings, and other elements appear consistent. For example, the height of Piston Peak’s central rockwork was calibrated to match the scale of the Haunted Mansion and Big Thunder Mountain, creating a seamless visual transition.
What’s Coming to Piston Peak National Park
The land will feature two attractions: the off-road racing adventure “Cars Ridge Run Rally” and the family-friendly “Miss Fritter’s Daredevil Spin Along” (a spinner ride based on the character from Cars 3). A new original character, Ranger J. Autobahn Woodlore, pays homage to classic Disney cartoons like Woody Woodpecker and Ranger series. The land is designed to fit into the Frontierland narrative, treating it as a national park within the wild west setting.

According to a Disney Parks Blog post from earlier this month, the team used advanced lidar scanning and augmented reality to overlay digital models onto the actual park environment. This allowed them to simulate the view from any guest location without requiring multiple physical balloon lifts. “We can now iterate designs in real time,” said one Imagineer. “If a mountain peak is too tall, we adjust it digitally, then recheck the sightlines within minutes.”
This technology is a significant upgrade from the traditional methods used for earlier expansions, such as the lowering of the Be Our Guest restaurant’s spires in 2012 to preserve the view of Cinderella Castle. The Piston Peak project benefits from these lessons, ensuring that the new land enhances the Magic Kingdom experience without compromising its classic charm.
Progress and Timeline
Construction is well underway, with steel framework visible behind construction walls. Guests can watch the transformation from the Walt Disney World Railroad and the Liberty Square Riverboat. Disney has not announced an official opening date, but industry insiders expect the land to debut in late 2026 or early 2027. The removal of Rivers of America has been controversial among longtime fans, but Imagineers emphasize that the new land will add much-needed capacity and a fresh attraction lineup.
