Paisley M8 accident

A man lost his life late Sunday night when he was hit by a car while trying to cross the M8 motorway near Paisley, Scotland. The incident occurred around 11:45 p.m. on April 6, 2025, and led to the highway being closed for several hours as authorities conducted their investigation.

According to Police Scotland, the victim—a 45-year-old man—was struck by a black Mini Cooper. Emergency crews arrived at the scene, but he was pronounced dead on the spot. His next of kin have been notified. No other injuries were reported.

Sergeant Jack Swindells said in a statement, "Our thoughts remain with the man's family and friends at this difficult time, and our enquiries remain ongoing to establish the full circumstances." He is appealing to anyone who witnessed the crash but has not yet spoken to officers, as well as drivers who were in the area and have dash-cam footage, to review it and share anything that could help the investigation.

The M8 is one of Scotland's busiest highways, running through the heart of the Glasgow metropolitan area. While pedestrian incidents on controlled-access motorways are relatively rare, they are often fatal due to the high speed of traffic. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), pedestrians struck on highways face a fatality rate of more than 80% in the United States—a figure that underscores the danger of crossing such roadways.

Local traffic safety experts have pointed out that the stretch near Paisley has seen multiple pedestrian-related incidents in recent years, raising questions about access points and barriers. "Motorways are designed for vehicles, not foot traffic," said Dr. Emily Rourke, a transportation safety researcher at the University of Glasgow. "This tragedy is a reminder that even short crossings can be deadly when drivers have limited reaction time at night."

The police investigation is continuing. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 3828 of April 6, 2025. Alternatively, information can be shared anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.

As the community mourns, the focus remains on determining exactly what led to the collision and whether any additional safety measures could prevent similar tragedies in the future.
