JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A pedestrian was hit by a car Monday morning at Old St. Augustine Road and Hood Road, prompting a heavy emergency response and turning the busy Southpoint-area commute into a crawl.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says deputies and rescue crews were called to the scene around 6:45 a.m. As of late morning, the pedestrian’s identity, age, and condition had not been released. JSO also hasn’t said whether the driver stayed on scene or if any charges are expected. The investigation remains active, and detectives are talking to witnesses.
Traffic impact
Our First Alert Traffic anchor KaJéza Hawkins has been monitoring the backup since the first crash reports came in. Live camera feeds show the southbound right lane of Old St. Augustine Road is blocked at Hood Road, with traffic being funneled into one lane. Backups are stretching past Gate Parkway and creeping toward the entrance to Southpoint.
Anyone heading toward Baymeadows Road or I-295 should plan around the area for at least the next hour. Southside Boulevard is a good alternate, and so is getting on I-95 and using J. Turner Butler Boulevard if you’re going east or west. Even normally quick side streets like 9A and White Oak are starting to fill up with drivers looking for shortcuts.
Why this spot is so tricky
The intersection at Hood Road has long frustrated Jacksonville drivers. Hood Road itself is controlled by stop signs, not a traffic light, and Old St. Augustine Road curves slightly right as it approaches the crossing. That means a driver heading north at sunrise can easily miss a pedestrian stepping out from between parked cars.
The city has studied safety upgrades along this corridor, but no concrete timeline for adding crosswalk signals or better lighting has been announced. Monday’s crash underscores just how urgent those improvements are, especially with the nearby office parks and apartment complexes putting more people on foot near this road every day.
What we still don’t know
JSO is not saying much yet beyond confirming that the crash happened and that officers are still working the scene. We expect an update from the Sheriff’s Office later this afternoon.
What you can do
If you were in the area around 6:45 a.m. and witnessed anything, JSO wants to hear from you. Their non-emergency line and the Traffic Homicide Unit are both available for tips. Drivers are being reminded to slow down in construction and emergency zones, and to watch for officers working near the roadway.
Action News Jax is keeping a crew near the intersection and will update this story as soon as new details become available. For now, the safest choice is to avoid Old St. Augustine Road between Gate Parkway and Baymeadows Road until the scene clears.
