ALBANY, N.Y. — Oct. 6, 2025 — New York State Police have activated Fall Safe, a six-day enforcement campaign targeting speeders and aggressive drivers, as part of the agency's fall traffic safety push.
The initiative runs from Monday through Saturday, with troopers assigned to marked patrol vehicles, unmarked cars, and aerial enforcement on major highways, parkways, and rural roads. State Police say emphasis will be placed on corridors with high crash rates and work zones, where posted speed limits are frequently ignored.
The enforcement period comes as statewide data from the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee shows speed remains a leading cause of serious injury crashes in New York. Nationally, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration attributes speeding to roughly one-fifth of all traffic deaths in recent years. By concentrating patrols over six days, investigators hope to collect real-time data and make immediate corrections in high-risk areas.
Troopers will also issue tickets for distracted driving, improper lane changes, and following too closely—behaviors often paired with aggressive driving. Under New York law, a driver can lose the right to drive for speeding above 100 mph, with fines up to $1,000 and possible jail time.
State Police leadership called the operation a proactive response to an increase in highway speed complaints from the public. The agency encouraged drivers to plan extra travel time, obey posted limits, and move over for emergency vehicles. Additional traffic enforcement details are expected later this fall as part of the state's Toward Zero Deaths initiative.
