Two people were injured Saturday night when a Chevrolet Camaro ran off a Morgan County road and struck a tree, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
The single-vehicle crash happened around 8:53 p.m. on Cup Tree Road, south of Clat Road, in the Lake of the Ozarks region. Troopers said the 2011 Camaro was heading south when it drifted off the right side of the pavement and collided with a tree.
The 32-year-old passenger, a woman from Osage Beach, was seriously injured and was flown by MU Air to University Hospital in Columbia. The 37-year-old driver, a man from Ivy Bend, suffered moderate injuries and was taken by Mid-MO Ambulance to Lake Regional Hospital.
Neither occupant was wearing a seat belt, according to the patrol's preliminary report. That absence is a key focus in the investigation: Missouri law requires front-seat occupants to buckle up, and the Highway Patrol has repeatedly stressed that seat belts are the most effective protection against severe injuries in a crash.
The Camaro sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene.
The crash remains under investigation, and preliminary reports may be revised as troopers continue reviewing evidence. The victims' names were not immediately released, and as of Sunday evening, no further updates on their conditions were available.
