The Monaco E-Prix has locked in its place on the Formula E calendar for at least six more years, with a five-year extension between the all-electric championship and the Automobile Club de Monaco (ACM) that runs through 2031. The 2027 edition, originally scheduled for May 15-16, has been moved up two weeks to Saturday, May 1, and Sunday, May 2, avoiding a clash with the FIA World Endurance Championship’s 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps race.

The change, approved by the FIA World Motor Sport Council, also aligns with Monaco’s broader 2027 events calendar. “This extension underscores the Principality’s central role in the evolution of electric mobility,” the ACM said in a statement, emphasizing that the deal ensures the continuity of an event that has become a highlight of the international racing season.

Formula E co-founder and chief championship officer Alberto Longo called the Circuit de Monaco “a stage like no other in motorsport.” The race, first held in 2015 as a biennial event on a shortened layout, became an annual fixture in 2021 and now uses the full 3.337-kilometer street circuit identical to the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix.

The extended partnership coincides with the arrival of Formula E’s most powerful car yet, the GEN4, debuting in the 2026-27 season. The GEN4 produces around 600 kilowatts of power with all-wheel drive, a significant leap from the previous GEN3 Evo. Monaco fans got an early preview during the 2026 E-Prix, when two-time Monaco Grand Prix winner David Coulthard drove the new car in a demonstration run.

The 2027 event will also introduce a new double-header format. Alongside the traditional E-Prix, a shorter, flat-out sprint race called “E-Prix Unleashed” will take place on the second day, offering a fresh twist for fans. This format is designed to increase on-track action and provide a distinct identity for each race day.

The deal is a landmark for the Principality, which has positioned itself as a hub for sustainable mobility. Monaco has invested heavily in electric vehicle infrastructure, and the E-Prix serves as a global showcase for clean energy racing. The extension also gives Formula E a stable anchor event in Europe, strengthening its calendar against the backdrop of growing competition from other electric series.

For fans, the 2027 race dates mean a change in travel plans, as the event shifts from mid-May to early May, potentially overlapping with other motorsport events like the Formula 1 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. However, the standalone nature of the Monaco E-Prix weekend—on a street circuit with no other series racing—makes it a unique draw.

Ticket sales for the 2027 Monaco E-Prix are expected to open in the coming months, with capacity limited by the tight street circuit. Past editions have sold out quickly, and early demand is anticipated given the new GEN4 cars and the sprint race format.

The announcement comes as Formula E continues to expand its global footprint, with races in markets like Saudi Arabia, India, and the United States. The Monaco extension provides a prestigious, long-term home for the series, reinforcing its commitment to racing in iconic locations.

As part of the celebration, Formula E also highlighted the environmental benefits of the championship, which has been carbon-neutral since its inception. The Monaco E-Prix, in particular, uses 100% renewable energy for all operations, including pit lane and broadcast facilities.

Looking ahead, the 2027 season will mark a turning point for the series as it enters the GEN4 era. The new cars are expected to be faster, more efficient, and more spectator-friendly, with improved noise and appearance. Monaco, with its tight corners and elevation changes, will provide a stern test for the new technology.

The extension also secures the future of the Monaco E-Prix as a showcase for electric racing innovation. The ACM has been a key partner in developing the event, and the prolonged agreement signals confidence in Formula E’s growth trajectory.

For now, the focus is on the 2026 Monaco E-Prix, which will serve as a final showcase for the current GEN3 Evo cars before the transition. The race will also host the first official demonstration of the GEN4 car, offering fans a preview of what’s to come.

Monaco Life, the original source of the announcement, also noted an exclusive interview with Formula E driver Maximilian Günther, who described the championship as “playing chess while driving a high-speed race car.” The interview is available for readers interested in deeper insights into the driver’s perspective.
