JSW MG Motor India officially launched the 2026 Hector Tomahawk range on April 10, 2025, with the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version starting at Rs. 13.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The PHEV is positioned as a more affordable alternative to the all-electric variant, with prices under the BaaS (Battery as a Service) model beginning at Rs. 21.80 lakh. Deliveries for the PHEV are set to commence in September 2025, while the EV version will follow in November.

Two Variants, One Powertrain

The Hector Tomahawk PHEV is offered in two trims: Exclusive and Essence. Unlike the EV variant, which also offers a five-seat option, the PHEV is exclusively available in a seven-seat configuration. This makes it a direct competitor to other three-row plug-in hybrids in the Indian market, such as the upcoming Toyota Innova Hycross PHEV (if launched).

Color Palette: Mono-tone and Dual-tone

MG has given the Hector Tomahawk PHEV a vibrant color lineup. Mono-tone options include Aurora Silver, Shadow Gold, Celadon Blue, Pearl White, Turquoise Green, and Starry Black. Dual-tone shades pair Celadon Blue with White, and Turquoise Green with White. The dual-tone scheme adds a premium touch, a popular trend in the Indian SUV segment.

Dimensions and Practicality

The SUV measures 4,745 mm in length, 2,130 mm in width, and 1,850 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,810 mm. The fuel tank capacity is 52 liters. Boot space is 192 liters with all three rows up, expanding to 528 liters with the third row folded. This is adequate for a family, though the 192-liter figure is tight for a full load of seven passengers.

Powertrain and Efficiency

Under the hood, the Hector Tomahawk PHEV employs a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine running the Atkinson cycle, coupled with a 20.5 kWh battery pack. Power is transmitted through a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT). MG claims an electric-only range of 115 km and a combined range of 1,100 km, making it one of the most efficient plug-in hybrids in its class. The 115 km EV range exceeds many rivals, including the Toyota RAV4 Prime (68 km EPA) and the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (61 km EPA), though those figures are for the US market.

Exclusive Perspective: What This Means for the US Market

While the Hector Tomahawk PHEV is not sold in the United States, its launch in India highlights MG’s growing confidence in plug-in hybrid technology. For American consumers, this model serves as a benchmark for affordable, long-range PHEVs. If MG ever enters the US market—a move the company has hinted at in recent years—a vehicle like the Hector Tomahawk PHEV could compete with the RAV4 Prime and the Ford Escape PHEV, especially given its sub-$20,000 starting price in India (after conversion). However, regulatory hurdles and brand recognition remain significant barriers.

Pricing and Booking

Prices for the Hector Tomahawk PHEV start at Rs. 13.99 lakh (approximately $16,800) for the base variant. The BaaS pricing model, which separates battery cost, starts at Rs. 21.80 lakh ($26,200). Bookings are open now across MG dealerships in India. The Essence variant adds features like a panoramic sunroof, 360-degree camera, and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), though full details are yet to be confirmed.

Conclusion

The MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV brings a compelling mix of seven-seat practicality, long electric range, and competitive pricing to the Indian market. Its 115 km EV-only capability and 1,100 km combined range set a new standard for plug-in hybrids in the region. While US buyers may have to wait for a potential MG entry, the Hector Tomahawk PHEV demonstrates what is possible in the affordable PHEV segment.
