Des Moines, Iowa – April 11, 2025 – A stolen vehicle suspect crashed into a utility pole near McKinley Elementary School on Friday afternoon, triggering a 90-minute "secure status" that locked down the campus. Des Moines Public Schools (DMPS) confirmed the protocol, which barred anyone from entering or leaving the building while classes continued inside.
The incident began just before 1 p.m., when Des Moines police officers attempted to stop a vehicle reported stolen. The driver refused to yield, leading officers on a short chase through the southeast side of the city. The pursuit ended at the intersection of SE 4th Street and Hartford Avenue, where the suspect's car struck a pole.
