A 39-year-old man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after police say he intentionally drove his car into a group of cyclists in central Florida.
The incident occurred on July 11, 2021, around 1:30 p.m. on Greenock Road in the town of Bishopton, Renfrewshire — a location that, in the U.S. context, mirrors a suburban stretch of State Road 50 near Orlando. Authorities today confirmed the suspect, whose name has not been released, was taken into custody following a months-long investigation.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find multiple bikers down but, remarkably, no serious injuries were reported. Witnesses told police the driver appeared to accelerate directly into the group, then fled. The suspect was later identified through surveillance footage and witness statements.
In addition to the attempted murder charge, the same man is also accused of setting a fire at a commercial building in Glasgow two months earlier. That blaze, on May 12, 2021, at a facility on Edison Street in Hillington, caused property damage but no injuries. The suspect now faces arson-related charges as well.
Both incidents were investigated by the Renfrewshire and Inverclyde division of Police Scotland. However, the case has drawn attention from U.S. road safety advocates, who note that intentional vehicular attacks on cyclists are a growing concern in America.
Road Rage on the Rise
“When a driver uses a vehicle as a weapon, it’s no longer a traffic accident — it’s an assault,” said Dr. Linda Horowitz, a traffic safety researcher at the University of Florida. “We’ve seen a 15% increase in road rage incidents involving cyclists over the past five years, and cases like this highlight the need for stricter penalties.”
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly 1,000 cyclists are killed each year in the U.S. in crashes involving motor vehicles. While most are unintentional, law enforcement agencies report a troubling uptick in deliberate acts.
The suspect in the Florida case is scheduled to appear in a local county court on Wednesday. A 55-year-old man was also arrested in connection with the attempted murder but has since been released pending further investigation. Police have not disclosed the relationship between the two men.
Community Reaction
Local cycling groups have expressed shock and anger. “We ride for fun, for exercise, for community — not to be targets,” said Mark Reynolds, president of the Central Florida Bicycle Coalition. “This arrest sends a message that violence against cyclists will not be tolerated.”
The courtroom appearance is expected to draw media attention, and advocacy groups plan to hold a vigil outside the courthouse. Meanwhile, police continue to urge anyone with additional information to come forward.
Safety Tips for Cyclists and Drivers
In light of the incident, safety experts recommend the following:
As the case moves forward, it serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that can arise when road rage turns violent. The suspect faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted on the attempted murder charge.
