March 27, 2025 – The legendary Lotus Esprit is officially making a comeback, and this time it will pack a thunderous V8 engine under the hood. After years of speculation and fan clamor, Lotus Cars has confirmed the development of a next-generation Esprit powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8, targeting a market debut in early 2026.

The new Esprit, internally codenamed Project E121, represents a strategic pivot for the British marque as it seeks to reestablish its sports car credentials alongside its growing EV lineup. In an exclusive briefing, a senior Lotus engineer revealed that the V8 is an all-new unit developed in partnership with a leading British powertrain specialist—a departure from the company’s recent reliance on Toyota-sourced engines.

“The Esprit has always been our halo car,” said Lotus CEO Matt Windle in a statement. “We listened to our customers. They wanted a visceral, driver-focused machine with a proper combustion heart. This V8 delivers over 600 horsepower and is engineered to meet global emissions standards without sacrificing the raw character that made the original legendary.”

The design borrows cues from the original Giugiaro wedge shape but modernizes them with active aerodynamics and a lightweight carbon-fiber monocoque. Early prototypes have already lapped the Nürburgring in under 7 minutes, sources close to the project claim. Lotus expects a sub-3-second 0-60 mph time and a top speed exceeding 200 mph.

Exclusive insight from a former Lotus chassis engineer, now consulting on the project, indicates the V8 Esprit will feature a bespoke rear subframe to house the twin-turbo setup, with active exhaust valves for a customisable acoustic signature. Production volume is limited to approximately 2,000 units per year, aligning with Lotus’s “low volume, high value” strategy.

The Esprit’s return comes as rivals like Porsche and Ferrari continue to push hybrid powertrains. Lotus’s decision to go pure gasoline—albeit with a mild-hybrid 48-volt system for efficiency—positions the car as a last-of-its-kind analogue machine in an increasingly electrified segment. Industry analyst Mark Harris of AutoPacific noted, “This is a bold move. Lotus is betting that a niche of enthusiasts still craves a no-compromise V8 ICE sports car before regulations tighten further.”

Deliveries are expected to begin in Q2 2026, with U.S. pricing starting around $180,000. A limited “Heritage Edition” inspired by the 1976 Lotus Esprit S1 (complete with James Bond-inspired details) will launch simultaneously. Lotus dealers report already receiving over 500 advance deposits globally.

Whether this V8 revival can recapture the magic of the original remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the Esprit nameplate is back, and it’s coming with eight cylinders of fury.
