July 30, 2026 – Lithia Motors (NYSE: LAD) delivered a second-quarter earnings beat that underscored the resilience of its diversified retail model. Revenue reached $9.8 billion, up 2% year over year, while adjusted diluted earnings per share rose 9% to $10.03. The company’s captive finance arm, Driveway Finance Corporation (DFC), posted record originations, and the used-vehicle segment rebounded sharply. Meanwhile, a structural cost-reduction initiative trimmed operating expenses, helping to offset a modest same-store revenue decline.

Record captive finance income fuels earnings quality. DFC generated $36.5 million in finance operations income, more than double the prior-year quarter. Originations hit a record $884 million, representing 17.5% penetration of vehicle sales. The net interest margin expanded 20 basis points to 4.8%, aided by an improved cost of funds. Chief Financial Officer Tina Miller noted that the captive portfolio’s average FICO score of 748 reflects disciplined underwriting focused on prime borrowers. The second-half outlook remains cautious, however, as senior vice president Chuck Lietz pointed to seasonal headwinds that could moderate financing profitability.

Used-vehicle GPU surges $339 sequentially. Total vehicle gross profit per unit rose to $4,119, a sequential gain of nearly $200. The used-vehicle retail GPU climbed to $2,019, up $339 from the first quarter, driven by dynamic pricing tools and an optimized inventory mix. President and CEO Bryan DeBoer stated that the company is still selling many value-auto vehicles at approximately 10% below market value, suggesting room for further margin improvement. This pricing discipline, combined with a stable new-vehicle GPU of $2,718 (flat for the third consecutive quarter), helped buffer the impact of a 2.2% decline in same-store new-unit sales.

Aftersales gross profit grows 3.1% on a same-store basis. The aftersales segment generated $599.7 million in gross profit, with margin expanding 120 basis points to 59.2%. Longer warranty periods and expanded labor rates contributed to the improvement. Management emphasized that the aftersales business provides a recurring revenue stream that becomes stickier as the service customer base grows – a key part of the “ecosystem” strategy that links DFC financing to future service visits and trade-ins.

SG&A improves 290 basis points sequentially. Adjusted SG&A as a percentage of gross profit improved to 68.6%, a 290-point sequential gain. Personnel costs declined 3% on a same-store basis, reflecting role consolidations, leadership reductions, and the expansion of remote finance functions. DeBoer stated that the company’s North American SG&A ratio of 66.2% positions it to reclaim the “#1 position in prominence as the lowest SG&A in North America.” The company plans to roll out Pinewood.AI solutions in North America later this year, which management expects to serve as a “10x scale multiplier” for global cost savings.

Share repurchases accelerate; dividend hikes. The company retired $242 million in shares during the quarter, or approximately 4% of outstanding shares, at an average price of $284. Over the past year, Lithia has repurchased 17% of its total share count. The quarterly dividend was increased 23% to $0.70 per share, reflecting management’s confidence in durable cash generation. Adjusted cash flow from operations reached $1.7 billion for the first half of the year, providing ample capital for both acquisitions and shareholder returns.

Electrified vehicles make up majority of new sales for the first time. Electrified vehicles (including hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and EVs) accounted for 55% of new vehicle sales in the quarter. This milestone reflects the accelerating shift in consumer preference and the company’s success in expanding its electrified inventory. DeBoer noted that certain international manufacturers are discussing exclusive dealerships that could cost $5 million to $20 million with no aftersales business, which could limit early adoption of those brands in North America. However, the UK operations, where partnerships with Chinese manufacturers are expanding, saw gross profit grow 12% and pretax income rise 78%.

Exclusive perspective: AI rollout and cost structure. The planned deployment of Pinewood.AI in North America represents a significant leap in operational efficiency. Unlike typical dealer management software, the agentic AI systems are designed to autonomously perform complex tasks within the workflow, such as inventory pricing, customer follow-ups, and finance document processing. Raymond James analyst John Murphy, who follows the sector, commented that the technology could reduce back-office headcount by 15–20% over the next 18 months, though he cautioned that adoption risks remain. Lithia’s management has not disclosed specific cost savings targets but expects the AI platform to be a “10x scale multiplier.”

Outlook and risks. Management expressed confidence in achieving similar profitability in the second half, but acknowledged seasonal headwinds for DFC and the impact of manufacturer pricing on new-vehicle margins. DeBoer stated that new vehicle GPUs have “stabilized” for the first time in six years, suggesting the floor has been reached. The company’s internal performance goal is “nothing but net,” ensuring that incremental volume translates directly to bottom-line profitability across the entire ecosystem.

Conclusion. Lithia’s Q2 results demonstrate the power of its vertically integrated model, where captive finance, aftersales, and cost discipline combine to deliver earnings growth even when top-line revenue is pressured. With a robust balance sheet, aggressive share repurchases, and a technology-driven cost reduction plan, the company is positioned to navigate cyclical headwinds while investing for long-term market share gains.
