April 15, 2025 – Lexus has taken the wraps off its most extensive mid-cycle refresh yet for the NX, the brand’s top-selling mid-size SUV. The 2027 model gains a new sixth-generation hybrid system that boosts EV range beyond 60 miles in the plug-in NX 450h+, adds DC fast charging, and introduces a fully revamped cockpit with a 14-inch multimedia screen and Lexus’s first-ever in-car fragrance concierge. The upgrades are designed to keep the NX competitive against rivals like the BMW X3 and Audi Q5 when it arrives in US showrooms in spring 2027.
The biggest mechanical news is the adoption of Lexus’s sixth-generation hybrid technology, shared across both the NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid and the NX 350h self-charging hybrid. The 450h+ now delivers an anticipated WLTP EV range “in excess of 60 miles” (provisional figure) – a significant jump from the current model’s 39-mile rating. For the first time, the plug-in NX also supports DC fast charging, enabling quicker top-ups on the go. The system also increases towing capacity to 1,500 kg (roughly 3,300 lbs), a key upgrade for US buyers who use their SUV for hauling trailers or boats.
The self-charging NX 350h also sees efficiency gains, with both powertrains expected to meet the upcoming Euro 7 emissions standard and achieve best-in-class CO2 figures for their respective segments. While US EPA ratings are not yet confirmed, the improvements point to a meaningful reduction in real-world fuel consumption.
Lexus has evolved the NX’s “Vital x Tech” design language with a more integrated, athletic look. The headline change is a new frameless spindle grille that blends seamlessly into the bodywork, improving aerodynamic efficiency. The front end is further cleaned up by new “all-weather” headlights that combine three-projector LEDs, adaptive high beam, cornering lights, and fog lights – all in a slimmer housing with dual-bar daytime running lights.
Out back, the light bar now features a repeated L-shaped motif that bridges a central illuminated Lexus logo, giving the NX a distinctive nighttime signature. Side sills are new, and chrome accents have been eliminated across the range in favor of dark finishes on door mirrors and body moldings. Wheel options include 18-inch and 20-inch multi-spoke alloys with a smoked finish.
New exterior colors include Sonic Platinum, Sonic Tellus (a rich khaki green), and an F Sport-exclusive Titanium Carbide Grey solid shade. The F Sport package also gains unique styling elements, though Lexus has not yet detailed US-specific trim levels.
Inside, the NX adopts a cleaner, horizontally oriented dashboard dominated by a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster (combimeter) and a 14-inch LexusConnect multimedia display. The system now includes “Responsive Hidden Switches” – physical controls integrated into the display that appear only when needed, aiming to reduce distraction.
The most intriguing new feature is the Lexus Sensory Concierge, which coordinates ambient lighting, climate control, audio, and – for the first time in Europe – in-car fragrances. Drivers can choose from several scent cartridges to create a mood-specific cabin environment, from “energizing” to “relaxing.” Lexus says this multi-sensory approach is part of its “Discover your Edge” theme, helping owners personalize their driving experience.
Lexus engineers focused on refining the “Lexus Driving Signature” – a promise of constant comfort, control, and confidence. The body shell is more rigid, the driving position and touch points have been reworked, and aerodynamic detailing has been enhanced to reduce noise and vibration. Suspension, braking, and all-wheel drive systems have all been revised to sharpen response without sacrificing ride quality.
Every 2027 NX will come with the latest generation of Lexus Safety System+ as standard, which includes pre-collision warning with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane tracing assist, and road sign assist. The LexusConnect multimedia system adds connected services for convenience, safety, entertainment, and vehicle security, including over-the-air updates.
The new NX will launch in Europe and the UK from spring 2027. US specifications, pricing, and model range have not yet been announced, but Lexus typically aligns its global lineup closely. Given the comprehensive upgrades, expect a modest price increase over the current model, which starts around $42,000 in the US.
“This is more than a typical mid-cycle refresh,” says auto analyst David Oakley of Global Auto Research. “Lexus is effectively introducing a new generation of hybrid powertrain and a digital cockpit that rivals the best in the segment. The 60-plus-mile EV range on the 450h+ puts it ahead of competitors like the BMW X3 xDrive30e and Volvo XC60 Recharge in pure electric capability. Combined with the new fragrance and lighting features, Lexus is clearly trying to differentiate on experience, not just specs.”
