Lepas, the newest brand under Chinese automaker Chery, is preparing to shake up the US small car segment with a hatchback that will offer both fully electric (EV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains. The model is slated for a global debut by 2027, and the company confirms the US is a primary target market.

While the brand has yet to announce a specific launch date in America, Chery executives are already positioning the upcoming hatchback as a direct rival to mainstream best-sellers like the Toyota Corolla, Mazda 3, and Honda Civic. The vehicle will stand on a dedicated electrified platform that supports both BEV and PHEV configurations, giving consumers flexibility without forcing a full commitment to electric-only driving.

“We’ve seen how the small car market in the US has contracted as buyers migrate to crossovers, but there’s still a loyal base looking for an affordable, efficient, and fun hatchback,” said Lucas Harris, Chery Motor Australia Chief Operating Officer and Managing Director, in a recent interview. “Lepas aims to bring fresh energy to that segment with design that pops and powertrains that actually lower ownership costs.”

Harris added that he previewed an early production-intent prototype and described the car as “sporty and aggressive—something you’d want to park in your driveway, not just a commuter box.”

Industry analysts believe the Lepas hatchback could benefit from growing demand for affordable PHEVs in the US, especially after the Inflation Reduction Act extended federal tax credits for plug-in hybrids with a minimum 7kWh battery pack. The PHEV variant of the Lepas hatchback is expected to offer roughly 35–40 miles of electric range, enough to qualify for the tax incentive and cover most daily commutes without burning fuel.

Meanwhile, the full EV version is anticipated to target the same price bracket as the Chevrolet Bolt and Nissan Leaf—around $25,000 before incentives—making it one of the most affordable electric hatchbacks on the US market.

The US small car segment has been in steady decline for the past seven years. In 2023, sales of compact cars fell to just 7.2% of total new vehicle registrations, down from 14% a decade earlier, according to data from IHS Markit. Yet, Chevrolet’s decision to revive the Bolt and Hyundai’s continued investment in the Kona EV show that demand persists, especially among first-time EV buyers and city dwellers.

“Lepas is actually smart to enter with both BEV and PHEV,” said Sam Fiorani, vice president of global vehicle forecasting at AutoForecast Solutions. “US buyers are still hesitant about full electrification due to charging anxiety. Offering a plug-in hybrid removes that barrier while still lowering emissions. Chinese automakers like BYD and MG have proven this formula works globally, and Lepas can replicate it here.”

Styling is another differentiator. Lepas plans to break away from the generic, rounded shapes common to many compact cars. Sources close to the brand describe the design as “sharp, sculpted, and identity-driven,” featuring LED lighting signatures inspired by the brand’s “solar flare” motif, and a low, wide stance that hints at sporty handling.

Interior materials will emphasize tactile quality: soft-touch surfaces, available vegan leather, and a minimalistic dashboard with a large infotainment display running Google Automotive Services. In contrast to many budget EVs that cut corners on interior design, Lepas promises a cabin experience that feels three segments higher.

The brand’s US entry plan is still under wraps, but leaked supplier reports suggest Lepas may use Chery’s newly acquired Barcelona factory for initial production, with a second line potentially coming to North America by 2028 to avoid tariff risks.

With a compelling mix of electrified powertrains, distinctive styling, and a price point that undercuts the likes of the Tesla Model 3, the Lepas hatchback is shaping up as one of the most interesting new entries in the US small car scene. Expect more details—including official EPA range estimates and the final name—closer to the 2027 launch window.
