Kyle Shanahan, head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, has publicly accepted full responsibility for a car accident that occurred on July 14, 2024, after initially being reported as the other driver's fault. In a media availability on Tuesday, Shanahan admitted he was distracted by his phone just before the collision, setting the record straight on the incident that left him with multiple injuries.

The coach explained that his phone fell between the seats while he was driving, causing him to take his eyes off the road. “I reached down to grab it, and by the time I looked up, I had crossed the double yellow line,” Shanahan told a select group of reporters. He was traveling at approximately 20 mph when he struck an oncoming SUV. The crash left him with a severe concussion, a broken nose, broken ribs, a broken hand, and a deep gash on his face requiring 40 stitches.

Earlier reports, citing crash records, incorrectly stated that the other driver was at fault. The Palo Alto Police Department has since confirmed that the initial data entry was a clerical error. In a statement to TMZ, the department verified that Shanahan was indeed the cause of the accident and that they are in the process of correcting the state database. The responding officer chose not to issue a citation, a decision the department noted is within their discretion and not uncommon for such incidents.

Shanahan’s admission comes as the 49ers prepare for the upcoming training camp. The coach has been recovering from the concussion, which he described as “serious.” He noted that he still struggles with loud noises and has been working closely with medical staff. Despite the severity of the injuries, Shanahan said he did not lose consciousness or experience amnesia after the crash.

Chris Simms, a close friend and former NFL quarterback, previously detailed the extent of Shanahan’s injuries, including the risk of nearly losing an eye. During the media session, Shanahan confirmed that account and showed reporters photos of the facial wound, praising his plastic surgeon for the work.

The 49ers organization has supported Shanahan throughout his recovery, and his coaching duties are expected to continue without interruption once he is medically cleared. The team’s front office has expressed confidence in his ability to lead, noting that his transparency about the accident reflects his character.

This incident underscores the dangers of distracted driving, even at low speeds. Shanahan’s openness about his mistake serves as a reminder for all drivers to keep their attention on the road. The Palo Alto PD’s correction also highlights the importance of verifying official records, as clerical errors can lead to public confusion.

As the 49ers head into the season, Shanahan’s recovery timeline remains a key focus. The team has not announced any changes to his schedule, but sources indicate he is expected to be fully present for training camp. The coach’s willingness to take ownership of the accident has been met with respect from players and staff, reinforcing his leadership within the organization.
