August 24, 2025 — Jaguar’s all-electric Type 01 concept continues to divide opinion online, with critics calling it “horrific” and “never to be repeated.” But while the social media noise is overwhelmingly negative, a quiet signal from one of the world’s most valuable companies suggests the car may have more going for it than the armchair experts realize.
Earlier this week, on its way to Monterey Car Week, the Jaguar Type 01 made a special stop at NVIDIA’s headquarters. Employees and executives gathered around the camouflaged blue prototype, alongside a classic Jaguar E-Type, showing genuine curiosity and excitement. Some were even allowed to sit inside the car. The visit wasn’t just a photo op—it underscores a deep strategic partnership that could redefine how the industry views Jaguar’s radical reboot.
NVIDIA, with a net worth exceeding $5 trillion, doesn’t throw its weight behind just any automaker. The company is developing its DRIVE AGX AI platform in partnership with Jaguar Land Rover, aiming to deliver next-level automation, over-the-air software updates, and AI-driven safety systems. For a brand like Jaguar, which is pivoting toward high-end, low-volume electric vehicles, having NVIDIA as a technology partner provides instant credibility—and a rebuttal to those who say the brand has lost its way.
The visit also highlights a key point: corporate partnerships are not made lightly. NVIDIA’s willingness to put the Type 01 front and center with its own team signals confidence in the car’s underlying technology. This isn’t a marketing stunt; it’s a bet on a shared future.
The backlash against the Type 01 is loud. On LinkedIn, a commenter named Steve called the car “never to be repeated,” comparing it unfavorably to the Jaguar XE Project 8. But the numbers tell a different story: the Project 8 produced 591 bhp, while the Type 01’s tri-motor powertrain delivers over 1,000 bhp. Another commenter, Gary, wrote that “Jaguar forgot what Jaguars are meant to be,” yet the brand has reinvented its appearance repeatedly—from the XK120 to the XJ series to the Type 01. What is a Jaguar “meant to be” if not a constant evolution of performance and design?
The Type 01 is undeniably different. Its low-slung, aerodynamic shape and minimalist interior have drawn comparisons to everything from a Batmobile to a spaceship. But the mission is clear: Jaguar is targeting a new class of ultra-luxury electric hyper-GT, one that competes with the likes of Rimac, Lotus, and even Ferrari’s upcoming EV.
Critics often focus on styling, but the Type 01’s true value lies in its engineering. Beyond the 1,000+ hp powertrain, the car will feature NVIDIA’s DRIVE AGX system, enabling advanced autonomous driving capabilities and continuous software upgrades. The platform is designed to be future-proof, with sensors and computing power that can evolve over time.
Jaguar’s partnership with NVIDIA also builds on an earlier relationship with Waymo. Nearly a decade ago, Waymo chose the Jaguar I-Pace as its first fully autonomous vehicle platform, citing its range, fast-charging battery, and spacious interior. That validation—from a leader in self-driving technology—should give skeptics pause.
Jaguar is not trying to please everyone. The Type 01 is a halo car, intended to reset the brand’s image and attract a new generation of wealthy, tech-savvy buyers. The high price tag (expected over $130,000) and low volume (reportedly fewer than 1,000 units per year) are deliberate. Jaguar is betting that exclusivity, combined with cutting-edge technology, can reclaim the brand’s lost prestige.
The online noise may be mostly negative right now, but that’s often the case when a legacy brand takes a bold leap. Remember the initial reaction to the first BMW i8 or the Tesla Cybertruck? Both were ridiculed—and both became icons in their own right.
NVIDIA’s endorsement is not just about the Type 01. It signals that Jaguar Land Rover’s broader electrification and software strategy is credible. The DRIVE AGX platform will likely be used across future JLR models, including Range Rover and Land Rover EVs. For JLR, this is a long-term bet on becoming a software-defined car company, not just a metal-bender.
The visit to NVIDIA also serves as a reminder that the loudest voices online aren’t always the ones that matter. While social media comments can provide entertainment, they rarely reflect the sophisticated calculus of a $5 trillion partner. If the Type 01 delivers on its promises—both in performance and technology—the narrative could shift quickly.
Jaguar’s Type 01 is a polarizing car, but it’s also a necessary one. The brand needs a statement vehicle to escape the shadow of its own heritage and step into a new era. With NVIDIA standing behind it, the car has a powerful ally that brings both technical expertise and market credibility.
Does that change the public’s perception? Not overnight. But it gives Jaguar a fighting chance to prove that its “copy nothing” philosophy isn’t a marketing gimmick—it’s a blueprint for the future.
