India’s Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has released a detailed rebuttal to social media claims that E20 ethanol fuel—now the standard blend across the country—causes engine corrosion, water contamination, and voided warranties. In a statement issued on July 18, 2025, the ministry presented a 10-point myth-buster after posts linked the fuel to everything from insects gathering around gas caps to catastrophic engine failure.
The ministry’s response follows a rapid five-year ramp-up of ethanol blending, from less than 1.5% in 2013-14 to 20% in 2025-26, reaching the target five years ahead of schedule. While the policy shift is driven by energy security and farm income, the immediate concern for millions of drivers is simple: Will E20 damage my engine?
No evidence of widespread failure
The government says it has not seen “any widespread issues of engine failure or vehicle breakdown” connected to E20. Testing was conducted by the Automotive Research Association of India, Indian Oil, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), and major vehicle companies. These tests covered durability, material compatibility, corrosion, drivability, and emissions.
Real-world data bolsters the case. Maruti Suzuki reported servicing 28.4 million vehicles in its 2025-26 fiscal year, including 15 million older models not originally certified for E20, without finding abnormal corrosion, wear, or reduced component life. Hero MotoCorp reported similar results.
Still, the ministry acknowledges that some older vehicles may need rubber seals or gaskets replaced sooner due to ethanol’s solvent properties. It describes this as a routine, inexpensive maintenance item—not a sign of engine destruction.
The mileage trade-off
The most credible concern is a small drop in fuel economy. The ministry’s latest guidance says some vehicles may experience a 3% to 5% reduction. For a car that normally gets 40 mpg, that means roughly 38 mpg.
Why? Ethanol has about one-third less energy per gallon than gasoline. However, ethanol also has a high research octane rating (around 108.5), which raises E20 to roughly 95 RON in India. That can improve acceleration and combustion in modern engines. The honest answer sits in the middle: a modest efficiency penalty in some vehicles, offset by potential performance gains in others.
Water and sugar myths debunked
One viral claim says producing a single unit of ethanol consumes 10,000 units of water. The ministry says that figure wrongly assigns the full agricultural water footprint of rice to the distillery. In reality, a typical ethanol plant uses about 3 to 5 gallons of processed water per gallon of ethanol produced. Only surplus rice—after national food requirements are met—is released for ethanol.
Other strange rumors include ethanol attracting ants or bees due to residual sugar. The ministry points out that fuel-grade ethanol is distilled and contains denaturants, making it unsuitable for consumption. Videos showing raw sugarcane juice poured into gasoline do not reflect industrial fermentation, purification, testing, and blending.
Ethanol can absorb moisture, but that does not mean it pulls water through a sealed gas tank. Modern vehicles and fuel stations use safeguards to keep water out, regardless of ethanol content. Routine maintenance—like checking the gas cap seal—still matters.
Warranties and insurance: Fine print matters
The government and SIAM say specification-compliant E20 does not automatically void a vehicle warranty or insurance policy. Manufacturers were involved in the transition, and SIAM has stated that warranties will be honored for vehicles running fuel that meets the required standard.
