I-77 crash

On March 8, 2025, Virginia State Police launched an investigation after a passenger car plowed into an Amazon tractor-trailer on Interstate 77 in Carroll County, leaving the vehicle pinned beneath the heavy truck. The crash, which occurred on the southbound lanes near mile marker 16.5, prompted a rapid response from local fire crews, but remarkably, the driver of the car walked away without a scratch.

First responders arrive to find car trapped under truck

Firefighters from the Hillsville Fire Department and Carroll County Fire Department were dispatched to the scene shortly after the collision was reported. When they arrived, they found the car wedged underneath the Amazon trailer, with the front of the passenger vehicle crumpled against the truck’s rear axle. According to officials, the sole occupant of the car was already outside the vehicle, standing on the shoulder of the highway, and appeared unharmed. Emergency personnel assessed the driver and confirmed no injuries — a fortunate outcome given the violence of the impact.

“The driver was extremely lucky,” said a Hillsville Fire Department spokesperson at the scene. “The car was essentially swallowed by the trailer. In most cases like this, we would expect at least minor injuries, if not worse.”

Investigation underway as police examine possible causes

The Virginia State Police have taken over the investigation, though no official cause has been released as of Sunday evening. Preliminary reports suggest the car may have failed to slow down in time, rear-ending the Amazon tractor-trailer as it was traveling at highway speed. Authorities are reviewing dashcam footage from the truck and interviewing witnesses to determine whether distracted driving, excessive speed, or a mechanical issue played a role.

“We’re still gathering evidence,” said Sgt. John P. Miller, a spokesperson for the Virginia State Police. “What we can confirm is that both vehicles were southbound on I-77, and the car struck the trailer from behind. The driver of the car was cooperative and provided a statement. The truck driver, an Amazon employee, was also unharmed and has been fully cooperative.”

The Amazon tractor-trailer, which was reportedly carrying mixed freight, sustained minor damage to its rear underride guard. Neither the truck driver nor the cargo was affected, and the vehicle was able to be moved to a secure lot after the car was extracted.

Highway safety concerns on I-77 in Carroll County

Interstate 77 is a major north-south corridor through the Blue Ridge Mountains, carrying heavy truck traffic between the Carolinas and the Ohio Valley. Carroll County, a rural area with winding mountainous sections of the highway, has seen a steady increase in commercial vehicle crashes over the past five years, according to data from the Virginia Department of Transportation. The stretch near mile marker 16 is known for its sharp curves and limited shoulder room, which can exacerbate the severity of rear-end collisions.

“This is a reminder for all drivers to maintain a safe following distance, especially when behind large trucks,” said Mike Carter, a retired truck driver and safety advocate who now volunteers with the Virginia Trucking Association. “A tractor-trailer needs significantly
