Dayton, OH – January 15, 2025 – A Ford Taurus traveling at high speed slammed into a commercial building in Dayton Tuesday afternoon, sending debris across the sidewalk and prompting a police investigation. The driver, who was seen fleeing on foot moments after the impact, remains at large. No injuries were reported, but authorities are treating the case as a serious hit-and-run.
Officers responded to the intersection of W. Fairview Avenue and N. Main Street shortly after the crash, which occurred around 2:30 p.m. local time. According to a preliminary statement from the Dayton Police Department, the vehicle was traveling northbound on N. Main Street at a “significant speed” before the driver lost control. The Taurus crossed the southbound lane, mounted the curb, and struck the front facade of a two-story building at 2226 N. Main Street.
“It appears the driver was traveling well above the posted speed limit of 25 mph in this area,” said Sergeant Mark Rivera, a public information officer for the Dayton Police. “We are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses to identify the driver and the vehicle’s origin.”
The impact tore through the building’s brick facade and shattered a large glass storefront window. The building, which houses a small retail shop and an upstairs office, sustained structural damage. A structural engineer from the city’s building inspection department was dispatched to assess safety. The building’s occupants were evacuated briefly but later allowed to retrieve personal belongings.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene. “I heard a loud screech, then a massive boom,” said Angela Torres, a cashier at a coffee shop across the street. “I looked up, and the car was halfway into the wall. The driver – a man in a dark hoodie – jumped out and ran down the alley behind the building.”
Police have not confirmed the driver’s description or whether the vehicle was stolen. The Ford Taurus, bearing Ohio license plates, was impounded for forensic examination. Investigators are also checking for any prior incidents involving the same vehicle.
The Dayton Police Department’s Traffic Unit is leading the investigation. Anyone with dashcam footage from the area between 2:15 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. is urged to contact the department’s non-emergency line or submit tips anonymously via Crime Stoppers.
This is not the first time high-speed driving has led to a building crash in Dayton. In 2022, a driver lost control on the same stretch of N. Main Street, hitting a utility pole and a parked car. However, Tuesday’s incident marks the first time in recent years that a vehicle has struck a building in the Fairview-Main corridor.
The intersection of W. Fairview Avenue and N. Main Street is a busy commercial hub, with restaurants, shops, and a gas station within a block. The crash forced the closure of one northbound lane for several hours while crews cleared debris and repaired a damaged fire hydrant. Traffic was redirected onto side streets, causing minor delays.
As of Wednesday morning, no arrests have been made. Police are continuing to canvass the neighborhood for additional witness statements and are reviewing footage from at least three cameras that captured the crash and the suspect’s escape route.
“We are confident that with the public’s help, we will identify the individual responsible,” Sergeant Rivera added. “Fleeing the scene of an accident, especially one involving significant property damage, is a serious felony.”
The building owner has been contacted and is working with insurance adjusters. Meanwhile, a local contractor has been hired to board up the damaged storefront. The retail shop remained closed Wednesday, with a sign on the door stating “Temporary Closure – Structural Repairs.”
