Rockstar Games has officially confirmed that the weapon system in Grand Theft Auto 6 will undergo a major overhaul, shifting away from the invisible inventory of past titles. As of April 2025, new details from Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson reveal that characters Jason and Lucia can no longer carry an entire arsenal in their pockets. Instead, NPCs will react to visible firearms, and players must manage their loadout more carefully.
NPCs Notice When You Carry a Gun in Public
The biggest change in GTA 6’s weapon system is how non-playable characters respond. In earlier Grand Theft Auto games, pulling out a rifle in a crowded street caused little reaction unless you aimed at someone. Rockstar now wants the world of Leonida to feel alive and reactive. Pedestrians will become uneasy if you hold a long gun in your hand, and they may back away or call the police. A long gun strapped across your back, however, draws less attention. According to Nelson, “If you’ve got a long gun on your back, you should be fine. If you’ve got one in your hand, people don’t like it, and they react and start moving away from you.” Police can also intervene if they see you openly carrying a weapon in a restricted area.
Two Concealed Handguns, Visible Long Guns Become the New Norm
Rockstar is changing how protagonists physically carry their firearms. Players can now keep two concealed handguns on their character without displaying them to the public. This allows for a stealthy approach in urban environments. Long guns, on the other hand, remain visible at all times. You can carry up to two long guns: one on your back and one in your hand. You cannot store both on your back; one must be held. Nelson explained, “You can always have two concealed handguns on you whenever you want. You can carry two long guns and they will be visible on your back and in your hand. You can’t put both on your back. One goes in your off hand, one on your back if you want to carry two. People will react to you if you are rolling around like that.”
Vehicle Storage Becomes Essential for Larger Loadouts
To access a larger collection of weapons, players will need to use storage locations. Recent previews and interviews confirm that vehicles now serve as mobile weapon caches. Personal vehicles can hold your selected loadout, and you can store firearms in the trunk. Even stolen vehicles can keep large weapons in their trunk as long as the vehicle remains available. This change gives cars a practical role beyond transportation: you must decide which weapons to bring before starting a mission or free-roam activity. No longer can you instantly switch to any firearm from an unlimited inventory.
Weapon Choice Now Influences Mission Planning
The new system forces players to think strategically about their loadout. Heading into a quiet neighborhood? Stick to concealed handguns. Preparing for a heist? Bring long guns but risk drawing attention while traveling through public areas. The choice affects both stealth and combat outcomes. Additionally, early reports indicate that GTA 6 will make weapons feel heavier, with stronger recoil and greater impact than previous games. Jason and Lucia can also hand weapons to each other, adding a cooperative layer to arsenal management.
Open World Reactivity Expands Beyond Weapons
The weapon system is part of a broader push toward a more reactive open world in GTA 6. Rockstar has been adding interconnected systems that respond to player actions. Police behavior, driving physics, character relationships, and everyday activities like walking through a market all adapt based on what you do. Nelson described the goal as creating a world where players can make choices without feeling like they are interacting with disconnected game systems. Simply walking down the street with a rifle could change how an encounter unfolds.
Compared to GTA 5, This Is a Fundamental Shift
In GTA 5, weapons were nearly invisible to NPCs, and you could carry dozens of guns without consequence. GTA 6 treats firearms as part of the physical world. Players will need to think about what they carry, where they store it, and whether pulling it out in public is worth the attention. This approach supports Rockstar’s broader push for realism without removing the freedom that defines the series. You can still carry powerful weapons, but you must manage them more carefully.
Exclusive Perspective: What This Means for Future GTA 6 Content
Industry insiders note that this weapon system could hint at more immersive role-playing elements in GTA 6. For example, carrying a long gun in a crowded area might trigger unique NPC dialogue or even a wanted level, encouraging players to consider their environment. The ability to store weapons in vehicles also opens the door for vehicle-centric missions where you must retrieve your gear from a car before a firefight. Rockstar appears to be investing heavily in making every player action meaningful, a trend that could extend to other systems like food consumption or sleep.
GTA 6 Release Date Remains Unconfirmed, But Details Keep Coming
While Rockstar has not announced a release date beyond “2025,” the steady flow of confirmed details suggests development is progressing well. The weapon system overhaul, combined with previous leaks about improved AI and driving physics, paints a picture of a deeply evolved open-world experience. Fans can expect more official reveals in the coming months, possibly including a new trailer that showcases the weapon visibility and NPC reactions in action.
