The company's leadership has outlined an ambitious target, expecting new-energy vehicles (NEVs)—a category encompassing battery EVs, hybrids, PHEVs, and range-extenders—to constitute nearly 80% of its total sales in the current year. This aligns with a long-term strategic goal of 75% NEV sales, signaling a deep commitment to transitioning away from traditional internal combustion engines. "Demand is not the challenge any more. After a dip below 4% penetration at the start of the year, electrified passenger vehicles surged past 8% of the market in June. The broader industry echoes this acceleration, with EV sales growth rates of approximately 70% year-over-year, dramatically outpacing the overall passenger vehicle market.
To capitalize on this momentum and widen its addressable market, MG plans a strategic entry into the plug-in hybrid segment later this financial year. The move is tactically positioned to appeal specifically to former diesel SUV buyers, a large and influential segment in many global markets, including the U.S., seeking torque and efficiency without range limitations. Mehrotra positions PHEVs as a pragmatic "best of both worlds" solution, offering the low per-mile running costs of electric driving for daily commutes combined with the extended range and refueling convenience of a gasoline engine for longer trips. This directly addresses pervasive range anxiety while reducing immediate dependence on widespread public charging infrastructure—a relevant consideration not just in India but in many regions of the United States where charger density varies.
While PHEV technology has seen substantial adoption in China and Europe, its uptake in markets like India and the U.S. has been more measured, where the industry focus has often bifurcated between pure battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and traditional hybrids. MG's push could signal a renewed interest in PHEVs as a crucial transitional technology. The upcoming models will be built upon MG's newly developed ADAPT platform (Advance Drive Architecture Platform Technology), touted as India's first multi-NEV architecture capable of supporting BEVs, hybrids, PHEVs, and range-extender EVs on a common base, aiming to improve economies of scale.
