Geely Monjaro EM-i

As of April 27, 2026 — Geely has introduced the Monjaro EM-i, the largest plug-in hybrid SUV in its range. It’s a D-segment model, which places it in the same general size class as a two-row midsize crossover in the U.S. The powertrain combines a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, two electric motors and a battery pack that can be sized up to 40 kWh. Geely’s published figures, measured on the WLTP cycle, show as much as 170 kilometers of all-electric range and up to 1,137 kilometers of combined range.

The Monjaro EM-i is not built on a clean-sheet platform. It’s an export-market version of the Geely Xingyue L, a model that has been rolling off Chinese production lines since 2021. The Monjaro name has already appeared in Russia, the Middle East and Africa. What makes the EM-i version stand out is its hybrid drivetrain and an electric all-wheel-drive system with two motors. CarNewsChina notes this is Geely’s first export model to feature that twin-motor AWD layout.

A bigger presence, inside and out

Geely has been moving away from the softer, rounder design language of its earlier models. The Monjaro EM-i carries sharp body lines and a wide chrome grille. The oversized headlamps dominate the front end and give the SUV a more formal, assertive stance. The overall look is meant to read as a genuine step up, not just another stretched crossover.

The cabin leans heavily into screens. There’s a 15.4-inch digital instrument cluster and a 25.6-inch central display. The center console uses crystal-finished controls, and the seats are trimmed in a suede-like material. Front passengers get massage, ventilation and heating; rear passengers also get heated seats. That equipment level is common on high-trim Chinese vehicles, but it stacks up well against European models that still treat seat ventilation as an extra-cost option.

Engineered as an electric-first SUV

The Monjaro EM-i rides on Geely’s GEA-Evo platform, which was designed from the beginning for battery-electric and plug-in hybrid powertrains. The architecture is intended to free up cabin space and support several different driveline options. The GEEA 3.0 electronic system handles driver-assistance functions and in-car safety features. Geely says the combination gives the SUV a roomier interior and a smarter driving environment.

EM-i Super Hybrid details

The hybrid system, called EM-i Super Hybrid, pairs a 1.5-liter turbo four-cylinder engine with two electric motors. Combined output is 305 kW, or roughly 409 horsepower. With the battery optioned at 40 kWh, Geely estimates up to 170 km of electric-only driving under WLTP. Add fuel, and the total range reaches 1,137 km.

The battery also supports V2L and V2V functions at up to 6.6 kW. That means the SUV can power a campsite, run tools, or charge another electric vehicle. It’s a practical feature that adds real-world value, especially as more buyers look for a single vehicle that can handle daily commutes and occasional off-grid use.

One model, several spec sheets

Geely has not locked in a single global set of specifications. European publication Moniteur Automobile lists the Monjaro EM-i at about 4.80 meters long, 1.895 meters wide and 1.70 meters tall. In U.S. measurements, that’s roughly 189 inches long, 75 inches wide and 67 inches tall, placing it in the midsize SUV bracket. Vietnamese news outlet VNExpress has also reported an export version with a 29.8 kWh battery, 130 km of electric range, 0–100 km/h in 5.8 seconds and a total range near 1,100 km. Those numbers may not reflect the final figures for Europe.

More than another Chinese import

Geely’s European rollout has been unusually fast. In Spain, the brand launched the E2, E5 and Starray EM-i within about a year. The Monjaro EM-i now fills the gap at the top of that lineup, giving Geely the flagship it previously lacked. This is not just a sales move. Plug-in hybrids like this one also help Geely meet European fleet emissions goals, support its dealer network and strengthen the brand before more models arrive.

The closest competition in the D-segment includes established plug-in hybrids such as the Ford Kuga PHEV, Volkswagen Tiguan PHEV and Toyota RAV4 Prime. Against those models, the Monjaro EM-i offers a larger battery, more screen space and long claimed electric range. Geely has not announced pricing, but recent launches in Europe have been positioned aggressively.

Paris debut is the next checkpoint

Geely is expected to show the Monjaro EM-i publicly at the Paris Motor Show later this year. That reveal should clear up the remaining questions: final European WLTP figures for power, battery capacity and range, plus official pricing. Until those details are confirmed, Geely’s current numbers should be treated as preliminary.

Should U.S. buyers care?

The Monjaro EM-i is not heading to U.S. dealerships. Geely’s own brand is not sold in the U.S., and no North American launch has been announced. But the model still matters. Chinese automakers are using Europe as a proving ground for larger, more expensive vehicles, and the Monjaro EM-i shows how quickly they can move from compact crossovers to bigger plug-in SUVs.

If the certified numbers deliver what Geely claims, the Monjaro EM-i could become a benchmark for plug-in hybrids in Europe. More importantly, it signals that Geely is no longer following the market. In a segment where customer loyalty to established Japanese and European brands runs deep, that is a direct challenge.
