April 10, 2025 – Two of the most affordable electric hatchbacks on the global market, the Geely EX2 and Leapmotor B05, have been put through the wringer by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) under its newly updated 2026 testing protocols. The results: both cars achieved a five-star overall safety rating, signaling strong performance in crash protection and avoidance. For U.S. consumers eyeing the entry-level EV segment, these scores provide a benchmark for what budget-friendly models can deliver in terms of safety, even if the vehicles are not yet sold stateside.

The Geely EX2, priced from AU$26,490 (approximately US$17,000), has quickly become a popular choice in Australia, racking up nearly 500 registrations in August alone after its late July launch. The Leapmotor B05, starting at AU$35,990 (roughly US$23,000), is the automaker’s newest and most affordable model in the Australian market. Both cars are compact hatchbacks designed to compete with the likes of the MG4 and BYD Dolphin, though they have yet to enter the U.S. market.

2026 Leapmotor B05 safety breakdown

The B05 scored a full five stars from ANCAP. The agency highlighted the car’s “strong crash avoidance performance,” particularly praising its lane departure warning and automatic emergency braking systems. However, ANCAP noted that the B05 could improve in scenarios involving pedal misapplication and driveway runover risks—areas that are increasingly scrutinized in modern safety protocols.

In the crash protection category, the B05 impressed with a 92% score. ANCAP pointed to a well-designed vehicle structure and restraint systems that effectively managed impact forces. The safe driving category, which evaluates driver assistance features and hazard awareness, yielded a 66% score. ANCAP said there is “room for improvement” in how the car anticipates and communicates risks to the driver.
