Original owners and lessees of certain 2023 and 2024 Ford Transit Trail vans can now file a claim for $6,000 under a court-approved class action settlement. The case is Provo v. Ford Motor Company, and the claim window will remain open until January 15, 2027.
This is not a recall benefit. It is a separate cash settlement for buyers and lessees who claim economic losses tied to a wheel-well defect. Ford denies the allegations, but the company agreed to resolve the case before trial. A federal judge in Delaware must still give final approval before anyone is paid.
The U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware has already given preliminary approval to the deal. The settlement administrator, Epiq, has launched the official claims website and is accepting online submissions. Paper claim forms are also being accepted by mail.
The final approval hearing is scheduled for March 16, 2027, at 10:00 a.m. ET in Wilmington, Delaware. As of this update, no final approval order has been entered, and no payment date has been set. That means eligible owners should file their claim now rather than waiting for a payment announcement.
The lawsuit centers on a defect in 2023 and 2024 Ford Transit Trail vans. The plaintiffs say the tires can contact the front wheel arch liner and body flange in certain driving situations. They claim Ford should pay for the loss in value and other economic harm caused by the problem.
Ford denies any wrongdoing and says the settlement is a way to avoid the cost, risk, and delay of continued litigation. The court has not decided whether the plaintiffs or Ford are correct.
This issue is also tied to a federal safety recall. In March 2024, Ford reported recall 24V226 to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. NHTSA records show about 1,902 vehicles are potentially affected. The recall remedy is free: dealers replace the tires, the tire placard, and the certification label, and recalibrate the vehicle.
Keep in mind that accepting the settlement does not cancel the recall. Class members can still get recall repairs at no charge, and their rights under the Ford New Vehicle Limited Warranty remain intact.
The settlement class is limited to people who were the original owner or lessee of a Class Vehicle. A Class Vehicle is a 2023 or 2024 Ford Transit Trail that was originally sold or leased by an authorized Ford dealer and was bought or leased new before June 1, 2024.
Other requirements include:
The original owner or lessee can qualify even if they have since sold the van or ended the lease. Someone who bought a Transit Trail used from a private seller does not qualify. There is only one original owner or lessee per van.
People who bought a Transit Trail for business or commercial use are excluded. So are people who already took legal action against Ford over this recall to a final judgment, people who gave Ford a release of related claims, Ford employees and family members, and the judges and court staff involved in the case.
Each eligible van with a valid, timely claim will receive $6,000. The payment is described as a fixed amount per Class Vehicle, not a share of a capped fund. That means a valid claim should not be reduced because other people also file claims.
Class attorneys will ask the court for up to $625,000 in fees and expenses. They will also request service awards of up to $3,500 for each named plaintiff. Ford will pay those amounts separately if approved, so they will not come out of the $6,000 class member payments. The court may award less than requested.
The settlement does not release Ford from claims involving personal injury, wrongful death, or damage to property other than the Class Vehicles.
This settlement does not allow claimants to simply enter a VIN and wait. The official claim form requires several items:
If the original purchase or lease agreement is unavailable, the administrator will accept other reliable documents. Those include a buyer’s order, retail installment contract, lease summary, bill of sale, certificate of title, registration or DMV record, financing or leasing record, or a dealer or intermediary invoice.
For online filing, claimants also need the Unique ID and PIN printed on the Postcard Notice sent to class members. Anyone who did not receive a postcard or lost it should contact the settlement administrator through the official website.
The claim deadline is January 15, 2027. Online claims must be submitted by that date, and paper claims must be postmarked by that date. The notice does not list a specific time of day or time zone, so it is smart to file well before deadline day.
The exclusion and objection deadlines are two days earlier:
Opt-out requests cannot be made by phone or email. They must be sent by first-class mail and signed personally by the class member. Someone who opts out will receive no payment and cannot object to the settlement.
Because postmarks are applied when mail reaches a processing facility, mailing a paper claim on the deadline date may not work. The settlement notice warns that the Postal Service may not postmark mail on the day it is dropped off.
The easiest way to file is through the official Ford Transit Trail Settlement website. The online form starts with the Unique ID and PIN from the Postcard Notice. Claimants then confirm their contact details, enter the VIN and purchase or lease date, upload ownership documents, and complete the tax information.
After filing, claimants should receive a confirmation email with a confirmation code. Keeping that code is important because it provides proof that the claim was submitted.
A paper claim form is also available on the website. It can be mailed with the required supporting documents and the W-9.
The settlement administrator will review claims to make sure they are complete and supported by the required documents. Missing paperwork, an incomplete W-9, or a mismatch between the VIN and the purchase date could delay a claim.
Payments will not be sent until after the court grants final approval and any appeal period ends. The final approval hearing is scheduled for March 16, 2027, but the date could change. The court may also hold the hearing by video or phone.
Class members should watch their mail and the official settlement website for updates. There is no announced payment date yet, so patience will be necessary even after a claim is accepted.
The $6,000 per van payment is a fixed amount, and the claim process is open now. Anyone who originally bought or leased a 2023 or 2024 Ford Transit Trail for personal use before June 1, 2024 should check their eligibility and file before January 15, 2027.
Start with the VIN and the original purchase or lease paperwork. If the postcard notice is available, keep it near the documentation. If not, use the official website to contact the administrator before the deadline. The longer the wait, the riskier the postmark and document issues can become.
