Fatal Seneca County crash: Driver killed, investigation ongoing

Updated April 10, 2025 — A driver died Friday night in a single-vehicle crash in Seneca County, New York, prompting an ongoing investigation by state police.

The crash occurred around 7 p.m. on Townsendville Road in the town of Lodi. According to New York State Police, a Chevrolet Cruze traveling southbound left the roadway, struck a tree on the east shoulder, then became airborne before landing on the west shoulder. The driver, the sole occupant, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Emergency responders extricated the driver from the wreckage. Police have not released the victim's identity pending notification of next of kin.

Investigation details

State police are examining factors such as speed, distraction, and road conditions. Townsendville Road is a two-lane rural highway with limited lighting in that section. Investigators are reviewing any available surveillance footage from nearby properties and are asking witnesses to come forward.

“We are working to determine the sequence of events leading up to the crash,” said a spokesperson for the New York State Police. “Anyone who may have seen the vehicle just before the accident or who has dashcam footage is urged to contact Troop E.”

Road safety context

The Lodi area, part of the Finger Lakes region, experiences a mix of agricultural traffic and tourist vehicles, especially during warmer months. According to the New York State Department of Transportation, Seneca County reported 12 fatal crashes in 2024, with single-vehicle accidents accounting for nearly half of them. The stretch of Townsendville Road near the crash site has no guardrails and a posted speed limit of 55 mph.

“Rural roads like this one often lack shoulders and have trees close to the roadway, which can turn a momentary loss of control into a deadly outcome,” said John Carter, a traffic safety analyst with the AAA Northeast. “Drivers should reduce speed on unfamiliar roads, avoid distractions, and always wear seat belts.”

Community response

Lodi town officials expressed condolences and said they would work with the state to review safety measures. “This is a tragedy that affects our entire community,” said Town Supervisor Marcia Reed. “We will await the investigation results before considering any changes to the road.”

The crash remains under investigation. No charges have been filed, and police have not indicated whether impairment was a factor. Autopsy results are pending.
