A devastating collision between a police vehicle and a Volkswagen Passat on the A66 near Middlesbrough has claimed multiple lives early Saturday morning, August 22, 2026. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has stepped in to investigate the incident, which occurred at 3:39 a.m. local time in South Bank.
The mandatory referral from Cleveland Police triggered the IOPC’s independent probe just over two hours later, at 6:03 a.m. Investigators have already been dispatched to review post-incident procedures and gather evidence. “This is a tragic incident, and my thoughts are with family and friends and all those affected, including the emergency services in attendance,” said IOPC Director of Investigations Nicola Marfleet. She emphasized that the investigation is in its earliest stages and that the force is fully cooperating.
Cleveland Police confirmed the crash involved a patrol car and a Volkswagen Passat on the A66, a major road in the area. “Sadly, the collision has resulted in multiple fatalities,” a spokesperson said. “There are significant emergency vehicles on the scene, and the road will remain closed for some time. The public are asked to use alternative routes.” Authorities are working to identify the victims and notify next of kin, urging the public to avoid speculation as the situation evolves.
The North East Ambulance Service dispatched a large response, including 14 units: ambulance crews, a specialist paramedic, a hazardous area response team, and a doctor from the Great North Air Ambulance Service. A spokesperson expressed condolences, noting that despite the best efforts of all responders, a number of patients died at the scene.
Local leaders have also offered their sympathies. Redcar MP Anna Turley was among the first to send condolences to the victims
