F40 EVO 3D-Printed V12 Solves Engine Packaging Nightmare

October 25, 2025 – When you try to stuff a 6.5-liter V12 into a Ferrari F40, the original packaging nightmare becomes a three-dimensional puzzle. StanceWorks founder Mike Burroughs has tackled this problem with a tool that weighs just 40 pounds and costs far less than a real engine: a full-scale 3D-printed replica of the Ferrari 812 Superfast’s V12.

The plastic surrogate, built from ABS by Vision Miner on its 22 IDEX printer platform, is not meant to fool anyone visually. It lacks surface details, but every dimension is exact. The goal is purely functional: to repeatedly lift the mock-up into the rear of the custom chassis and verify that the engine doesn’t collide with the firewall, seats, driveline, axle, pulleys, or mounts. Without the replica, the team would be wrestling a real 800-horsepower engine—heavy, expensive, and risky—into a tight space every time they needed to check a millimeter.

Burroughs, known for his previous K24-powered Ferrari 308 and the current F40 EVO build, explained the thinking in a recent video. “The purpose of this is to make sure that as we work in the back of the car and we start mounting other parts and pieces that none of them are going to foul the engine,” he said. The mock-up allows trial-and-error assembly without the consequences of denting a real V12 or scratching freshly painted bodywork.

Why Print a Plastic V12?

The original F40 carries a twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter V8 making 478 cv. The replacement engine—the naturally aspirated 6.5-liter F140GA from the 812 Superfast—produces 800 cv at 8,500 rpm and 718 Nm of torque. That’s 67.4% more power and 2.21 times the displacement. Even with the engine bay expanded, clearance is a major concern.

Vision Miner’s 22 IDEX V4 printer, a $14,900 machine with 500°C print heads and a 200°C build platform, spent over 400 hours—roughly 16.7 straight days—producing the engine in multiple pieces. The 350×350×450 mm print area couldn’t hold the entire V12, so the team assembled the parts after printing. The final weight of 40 pounds makes it easy to handle by hand.

The printer itself is designed for engineering prototypes, fixtures, and automotive development. In this case, the project doubles as a compelling advertisement for the machine’s capabilities. Burroughs acknowledged the investment: “We’re looking at more than 400 hours of print time. But this thing is gorgeous.”
