The feature, now live within eBay’s “My Garage” section on both desktop and mobile, pulls data from state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) records and vehicle history reports to pinpoint the exact components most likely to fail an upcoming inspection.

Drivers simply enter their vehicle’s license plate number or VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) into the eBay Inspection Prep Hub. The tool then cross-references that information with public and proprietary data sources, including state inspection records from the past five years (where available) and vehicle history reports from providers like CARFAX.
The result is a targeted list of parts that have failed or received advisories in previous inspections. For example, if a 2022 Honda Civic was flagged for “worn wiper blades” during its last inspection, the hub will issue a reminder to check and replace them before the next test. It also links directly to replacement parts sold on eBay, sorted by compatibility with the specific vehicle.
eBay’s director of automotive parts and accessories, Sarah Lin, explained the thinking: “We saw that many drivers walk into an inspection blind, not knowing what failed before. By making that data accessible and actionable, we’re helping people take control of their own vehicle maintenance.”
The launch of the Inspection Prep Hub follows eBay’s analysis of anonymized inspection data from 2024–2025, obtained through public records requests and partnerships with state inspection agencies. The numbers are striking:

eBay’s data shows that vehicles with a full maintenance history recorded in My Garage are 40% less likely to fail an inspection, simply because owners are reminded to address minor issues before they become major problems.
Despite being the leading cause of failures, tire replacement is often beyond the average home mechanic’s skill set. eBay’s hub doesn’t expect everyone to mount tires themselves, but it does prompt drivers to check tread depth with a penny test and to inspect for sidewall cracks. Those who do find issues can order tires from eBay and then schedule installation through a local garage using eBay’s partner network.
“The goal is not to force everyone into DIY,” said Lin. “It’s to give drivers the information they need to make an informed decision—whether that’s buying a $8 bulb and fixing it in five minutes, or knowing they need to budget for new tires before the inspection date.”
Vehicle inspection requirements vary widely—from annual safety checks in states like New York and Texas to emission-only tests in California and Colorado, to no inspection at all in Michigan or Mississippi. eBay’s Inspection Prep Hub adapts to each state’s specific rules by pulling the relevant testing criteria from public databases.
For example, a driver in Pennsylvania will see reminders about brake lining thickness and steering play, while a driver in Arizona will be alerted about evaporative emissions system leaks. The system flags any component that has a history of failure for that specific vehicle on record.
Early adopters on eBay’s automotive forums report that the tool has already saved them from failed inspections. “I had no idea my car had a pending airbag recall until I plugged it into the hub,” wrote one user. “It ordered the part, and the dealer installed it for free. My inspection passed two days later.”
eBay’s Inspection Prep Hub is a logical extension of the company’s growing automotive parts business, which has seen double-digit growth in the past two years. By combining vehicle history data with a frictionless purchasing experience, eBay is positioning itself as a one-stop shop for pre-inspection preparation.
