A 34-year-old man was arrested early Thursday morning after he allegedly threw flaming junk out of his car window while driving drunk on Interstate 5 near Bakersfield, California, then crashed into a guardrail. The incident, which occurred around 2:30 a.m. on April 9, 2025, sparked a small brush fire along the shoulder but resulted in no injuries to the driver or other motorists.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), witnesses reported seeing sparks and flames shooting from the driver’s side window of a silver sedan traveling northbound at approximately 70 mph. The debris, described as a mixture of paper and plastic, ignited a patch of dry grass before the driver veered sharply to the right and slammed into a metal guardrail.
“The driver was clearly impaired,” said CHP Officer Maria Torres during a press briefing. “He admitted to consuming several alcoholic beverages before getting behind the wheel. The fact that he was also throwing burning material out of the window shows a complete disregard for public safety.”
The suspect, identified as Michael R. Henderson, a resident of Bakersfield, was taken into custody without further incident. He faces charges of DUI (Causing Injury), reckless driving, and illegal disposal of hazardous materials. A blood alcohol content test administered at the scene registered 0.15 percent, nearly twice the legal limit in California.
The brush fire, which burned about half an acre of roadside vegetation, was quickly extinguished by Kern County Fire Department crews. No structures were threatened, and no other vehicles were involved in the crash. Henderson’s car sustained significant front-end damage and was towed from the scene.
This incident highlights a growing concern among law enforcement about the dangers of impaired driving combined with reckless behavior. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data shows that alcohol-impaired driving fatalities accounted for 31% of all traffic deaths in 2023, the most recent year with complete statistics. While the number of DUI arrests has declined slightly in California over the past two years, the severity of individual cases has increased, according to local police reports.
“Throwing any object from a moving vehicle is illegal, but doing so with a flammable material while intoxicated takes it to another level,” said Dr. Emily Chen, a traffic safety researcher at the University of Southern California. “This case is a stark reminder that drunk driving can lead to unpredictable and highly dangerous outcomes.”
The CHP has urged anyone who witnessed the incident or has additional information to contact their Bakersfield office. The suspect is being held at the Kern County Jail on $50,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
Local residents expressed shock at the incident. “You hear about drunk drivers, but throwing fire out the window? That’s just insane,” said Sarah Jenkins, who lives near the crash site. “I’m glad no one got hurt, but this guy needs serious help.”
Experts recommend that drivers who see a suspected drunk driver on the road call 911 immediately and maintain a safe distance. The CHP also reminds the public that designated drivers and ride-sharing services are widely available alternatives to impaired driving.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are reviewing dashcam footage from a nearby truck driver that may have captured the moments leading up to the crash. If convicted, Henderson faces up to three years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000.
