A Delaware man is facing multiple felony charges after police say he deliberately drove his car into a Newark pub while intoxicated earlier this month. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of August 15, resulted in significant property damage but no injuries, as the business was closed at the time.

Johnny Guzman, 35, of New Castle, turned himself in on August 20 after a warrant was issued for his arrest. He was charged with driving under the influence (DUI), leaving the scene of a property collision, malicious mischief by a motor vehicle, and several other related offenses. According to state police, Guzman was released on a $2,650 unsecured bond pending a future court appearance.

The crash happened around 1:30 a.m. at Two Stones Pub, located at 1203 Christiana Road. Officers responding to the scene found an unoccupied silver Mitsubishi Lancer that had smashed into the front of the building. The pub’s front entrance and facade sustained visible damage, requiring repairs by contractors, electricians, and painters.

Police quickly identified Guzman as the suspect after finding documents bearing his name inside the vehicle. Troopers located him a short distance away, walking along Christiana Road away from the crash site. Authorities noted that Guzman displayed multiple signs of impairment and refused to perform field sobriety tests. He was taken to a local hospital for medical evaluation due to his level of intoxication, while troopers obtained and executed a search warrant to draw his blood.

Investigators later determined that Guzman had been a patron at the pub earlier that evening. Staff members asked him to leave on several occasions, but he remained on the premises for hours. Eventually, Guzman entered his vehicle, accelerated, and intentionally turned toward the pub’s front doors, crashing into the building, according to police.

The incident has raised concerns about the dangers of drunk driving in the area. Local law enforcement officials reiterated that driving under the influence remains a serious public safety threat. Under Delaware law, a first-offense DUI can result in fines up to $1,500, license suspension for up to 12 months, and possible jail time. Repeat offenders face increasingly severe penalties, including mandatory ignition interlock devices.

Two Stones Pub announced that it reopened on Monday, August 26, at 11:30 a.m., following the completion of repairs. The management expressed gratitude to the community for their patience and support during the closure. The pub, which first opened in 2012, is a popular spot for craft beer and American cuisine in the Newark area.

Community members have voiced mixed reactions to the incident. Some expressed relief that no one was hurt, while others called for stricter enforcement of drunk driving laws. “It’s scary to think someone would do that intentionally,” said a local resident who lives near the pub. “We’re just glad the business is back open and that no one was inside.”

The case also highlights the importance of bystander intervention. Staff at Two Stones Pub had attempted to de-escalate the situation by asking Guzman to leave, but he refused. Police encourage bar and restaurant employees to contact law enforcement immediately if a patron appears intoxicated and poses a risk.

Guzman’s court date has not yet been scheduled. He is presumed innocent until proven guilty. The investigation remains active, and additional charges may be filed as authorities continue to review evidence.

As of August 27, 2025, the pub has resumed normal operations, and the damaged area has been fully restored. Management said they are taking steps to enhance security, including reviewing surveillance footage and ensuring that staff are trained to handle disruptive patrons.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potentially devastating consequences of drunk driving. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, alcohol-impaired driving fatalities accounted for about 31% of all traffic-related deaths in the United States in recent years. Delaware has seen a slight uptick in DUI arrests over the past year, prompting increased patrols and awareness campaigns.

Authorities are urging anyone who witnesses suspicious or dangerous behavior to report it immediately. “One call can save a life,” said a police spokesperson. “We are fortunate that this crash did not result in tragedy, but the outcome could have been very different.”

For now, the community of Newark is moving forward, grateful that an accident with the potential for serious harm ended without injury. Two Stones Pub continues to serve its customers, with a renewed focus on safety and cooperation with local law enforcement.
