Delhi car crash

A 45-year-old auto-rickshaw driver died and another man was injured Saturday morning when a car hit two vehicles in Sukhdev Vihar, a locality in southeast Delhi, police said. The emergency call about the crash was received at 7:15 a.m., nearly 15 minutes after the collision took place. The dead man was identified as Md Kalam, a resident of New Friends Colony. The injured man, Md Bablu, lives near Sukhdev Vihar Metro station.

The accident occurred around 7 a.m., when traffic was beginning to build on the roads leading toward main south Delhi routes. Police said a car first hit Kalam’s auto-rickshaw and then struck a cycle rickshaw. Both damaged vehicles remained at the scene while a crime team examined the area. The car was also found there, and its condition was being documented as part of the investigation.

A tea seller who was standing 10–20 metres away gave police an account that has become central to the case. He said two cars were racing on the road when one of them lost control and crashed into the other vehicles. The witness also claimed that four people came out of the car after the crash and fled the spot in the second car. That account has led police to treat possible street racing as a major angle.

Kalam was rushed to Escorts Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. His body has been shifted to AIIMS for a post-mortem examination. The post-mortem report is expected to provide more clarity on the nature of the injuries and help investigators reconstruct the crash. Police have not announced any arrests in the case as of Monday.

Investigators are now trying to trace the second car and the four occupants who reportedly left the scene in it. The tea seller’s statement will be tested against physical evidence, including damage patterns on the recovered car and the auto-rickshaw. Police are also checking nearby CCTV cameras to verify the racing claim and to track the direction in which the second car fled.

If confirmed, the racing allegation could carry serious legal consequences. Under Indian law, causing death by a rash or negligent act is a penal offence, and dangerous driving on a public road can also attract separate charges. The people who allegedly helped the driver flee could face additional legal scrutiny for failing to stop at an accident scene and for suppressing evidence.

The injured man, Md Bablu, is said to be receiving medical care. Officials have not disclosed the extent of his injuries. Police have not yet described the sequence of events as final and are waiting for forensic reports, witness verification, and CCTV data before closing the initial investigation.

This incident has again drawn attention to the vulnerability of auto-rickshaw drivers in Delhi traffic. These vehicles operate with an open frame and offer limited protection in a collision. Even a relatively short period of high speed can turn a minor impact into a fatal one. Road-safety researchers have repeatedly pointed to speeding as one of the main contributors to road deaths in Delhi.

The area around Sukhdev Vihar has a mix of residential blocks, commercial establishments, and metro access points. During weekday mornings, pedestrians, cycle-rickshaw pullers, and auto drivers share the road with cars and buses. Locals say vehicles often move at high speed on this stretch, and Saturday’s fatal crash has revived concerns about the lack of effective speed control in such pockets of south Delhi.

Police said the probe is continuing. One official familiar with the investigation said the focus is on establishing the exact speed of the car, the sequence in which the two vehicles were hit, and the identities of the people who fled. The car’s registration details, the owner’s statement, and any available footage from nearby shops or metro stations will be crucial.

The race allegation is not yet confirmed. Police said they are treating the tea seller’s version as an important lead but are also collecting other statements. Forensic teams have been asked to preserve evidence from the damaged vehicles so that an independent reconstruction of the crash can be carried out if required.

In several recent Delhi road accidents, witness accounts have played a decisive role in police investigations. But officials noted that such claims need to be supported by technical evidence. The final charges, if any, will depend on whether investigators can establish who was driving the car and whether there was an agreement to race.

No formal document detailing the charges had been shared by police by Monday. However, in a case involving a death on a public road, an FIR is usually registered soon after the incident. Officers at the local police station are continuing to record statements and have not ruled out questioning the registered owner of the car and the second vehicle.

The case has also highlighted the larger issue of road safety in the capital. Delhi has witnessed several fatal accidents involving speeding cars in recent years. Traffic data collected by the city police in past years has identified overspeeding, careless lane changes, and poor visibility as major causes of crashes. Sunday’s incident was part of that broader pattern, even though the precise cause has not yet been confirmed.

The autopsy at AIIMS is one of the key pending steps. The post-mortem will confirm the exact injuries Kalam suffered and whether the impact was severe enough to explain his death at the scene or on the way to the hospital. Police are also likely to examine whether the auto-rickshaw had valid permits and whether the car was being driven with proper documentation.

For now, the focus remains on gathering evidence and locating the second vehicle. Police appealed to any additional eyewitnesses to come forward with information. The investigation into the Sukhdev Vihar car crash is still open, and no conclusions have been made public beyond the preliminary findings given to reporters.
