deadmau5's AUTO/PILOT DJ software has officially entered public beta, offering a deep all-in-one mixing and live performance environment for a discounted $50. As of June 20, 2025, anyone can download and test the platform, which integrates sequencing, sampling, plugin support, and extensive MIDI/OSC routing — a direct reflection of how the producer himself builds his shows.
AUTO/PILOT is not just another DJ deck. It’s a hybrid tool that merges traditional DJ mixing with the timeline-based arranging you’d expect from a DAW. Think of it as Ableton Live’s Session and Arrangement views fused into a single interface, but purpose-built for DJs and electronic music performers. The software lets you mix tracks on decks, trigger clips, sequence patterns, and record automation — all inside one window.
The project follows deadmau5’s earlier controller platform, OSC/PILOT, which laid out his philosophy on hardware-software integration. Now AUTO/PILOT takes that concept further by turning the computer itself into a performance instrument. The interface is highly customizable: you can resize, rearrange, and hide panels to match your personal workflow. That’s a level of flexibility most DJ software doesn’t offer.
Most DJ software (Traktor, Serato, Rekordbox) focuses on mixing and looping, with limited sequencing or automation. Live performance tools like Ableton Live offer sequencing but require a steeper learning curve for DJ-style mixing. AUTO/PILOT tries to bridge that gap: you can load a track, beatmatch it, and then jump into a sequencer to build a live arrangement — all without switching apps.
The $50 price point is aggressive compared to Traktor Pro 3 ($99) or Ableton Live Intro ($99). For a beta, it’s a low-risk entry. However, there’s no free trial, so you’ll need to commit upfront. The software currently supports Windows 10/11 and macOS 11+ (exact specs not listed), and the official launch date hasn’t been announced.
deadmau5 has been vocal about the limitations of traditional DJ software. In interviews, he’s described wanting a tool that “doesn’t get in the way” of creativity. The public beta suggests he’s serious about delivering that. The deep MIDI/OSC routing is particularly noteworthy: for touring artists who control lighting, visuals, and audio from one rig, AUTO/PILOT could become a central hub.
Steve Duda’s involvement adds credibility. His work on Serum is legendary, and his tempo-detection algorithms are already praised for accuracy. That means less time waiting for analysis and more time playing.
The beta is still early. There’s no built-in music library management (you’ll need to browse files manually), no streaming service integration (like Beatport or Tidal), and no dedicated hardware controller designed specifically for the software — though deadmau5’s OSC/PILOT controller works with it. The maker also hasn’t confirmed whether the $50 price will remain after launch or if it’s a limited-time beta discount.
AUTO/PILOT is a genuine attempt to rethink DJ software from the ground up. It’s not a clone of Traktor or Ableton — it’s something in between, with a strong emphasis on customization and live performance control. For $50, it’s a low-cost experiment for anyone curious about a new workflow. If you’re a DJ or live performer who wants to break free from traditional decks, the public beta is worth a look.
